USF Tops Women’s Tennis on Foggy Sunday Afternoon

TAMPA, Fla. - USF emerged out of a two and a half hour fog delay to take the match Sunday, claiming close points in singles and doubles en route to a 6-1 win against the visiting Ospreys (2-1).

Junior Lucia Montaño stayed flawless at number-two singles for the season, grinding out a 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (11-9) victory against Evelyne Tiron to secure UNF's lone point. Montano wasn't the only Osprey with an opportunity, as sophomore Valentina Mariotto rallied from down a set to force a tiebreaker before falling to Laura Pellicer Perello at number-four singles.

The Bulls handled number-two doubles, 6-1, although it was anyone's game at first and third doubles. Constanza Gorches and Rafaela Gomez led early, although Nicole Dzenga and Vanja Klaric took a 5-5 deadlock and earned the last two points to close out the overall point for USF. Sophomore Florencia Rossi and Montano eyed a victory at number-three doubles, leading 6-5 before it was left unfinished.

Cobra's Comments
"South Florida was just better than us today, and you have to credit USF for staying mentally strong throughout the match. It took us a while to get going in singles, which ended up hurting us. Despite the loss we weren't without chances, especially at number one and three doubles. Unfortunately we weren't able to earn those points, but we have to get back to work for two more matches next weekend." -- Head coach Mariana Cobra
