Ospreys Topple No. 3 Florida, 7-1

Second-Highest Ranked Opponent UNF Has Defeated in Division-I History

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Four games into the 2019 season and the Ospreys have recorded three wins against SEC schools.

UNF scored early and often, clubbing three home runs behind a dominant bullpen to upend No. 3 Florida, 7-1, Wednesday, February 20. This is the second-highest ranked opponent that UNF has ever defeated after UNF's 10-5 defeat of Florida in 2012.

Pitchers of Record:

UNF | Ethan Michaelis (1-1)

Line Scores:

Behind the Line Score
  • UNF's pesky first inning put them up, 1-0. Weeks legged out an infield hit, Chris Berry rolled a single into right and UF's second baseman booted a David Maberry ground ball. Jay Prather made the Gators pay, roping an RBI single into right.
  • Starting in the second two of UNF's three Tanners in the starting lineup would homer, giving UNF a 3-0 lead. May belted one out of the stadium in left before Murphy followed suit with his own long ball in the third.
  • Florida threatened in the fifth. Back-to-back two-out singles put two on for shortstop Brady McConnell. McConnell sent Michaelis' delivery all the way to the track in center, but Murphy reeled it in to end the frame.
  • UF did get on the board with one in the sixth. Nelson Maldonado reached second after a single and throwing error from Berry at third. Wil Dalton singled a batter later before Cory Acton drove Maldonado in with a sacrifice fly.
  • Freshman Logan Clayton wasn't phased by the moment, spinning 2.2 innings of scoreless baseball to bridge the Ospreys' lead into the ninth before UNF tacked on four more.
  • Catcher Tanner Clark provided an RBI-single before Berry put the exclamation point on the night with a towering three-run blast to the scoreboard in right.
  • Trace Norkus turned in a scoreless ninth to seal up the 7-1 win.

Comments from Coach:
"Their guys did a nice job of keeping us off balance, but our guys went out there and threw strikes and that's what you do when you get a lead. It's a nice week right now. We have four this weekend and we can celebrate this one until midnight, but then we have weights tomorrow morning at eight o'clock and then we have to get ready to go to practice and prepare for the weekend." -- Head coach Tim Parenton.
