WILMINGTON, N.C. - The front half of men's tennis' (2-2) two-match trip to North Carolina went in favor of UNC - Wilmington, 7-0, at the UNCW Courts Friday night.
"Really disappointing effort today on our end," head coach
Matt Lucas said. "UNCW is very tough at home and we definitely didn't adjust to the adversity the match presented.
The two-time defending Colonial Athletic Association Champions were on the winning end for the first time in the two team's four meetings in a series that dates back to 2012.
UNCW (2-3) took both doubles matches that went to completion.
Till Von Winning and
Nilo Duarte held the 6-5 advantage at number two doubles before it was left unfinished.
Von Winning returned to go up against a tough counterpart in Agustin Savarino at number one singles, falling in two sets, both of which went to tiebreaker.
Nilo Duarte and
Jorge Nunez vied for wins at number four and five singles, although the decisive third sets went to the hosts in both matches.
"The guys will learn from this and it won't happen again. With that being said we have a tremendous opportunity tomorrow against a top 25 NC State team that we need to be excited for."
UNF will move on to its next match in less than 24 hours, an 11 a.m. bout with NC State in Raleigh.
