JACKSONVILLE - North Florida women's basketball begins its stretch of nine games away from UNF Arena beginning with in-state foes No. 17 Miami and FIU.
1. FAMILIAR TERRITORY
North Florida heads to Miami for the first time under head coach
Darrick Gibbs tenure. Gibbs was an assistant coach under Coach Meier from 2003-2015 at Charlotte and Miami. The Ospreys also travel to
Alexis Gordon's former stomping grounds when they play FIU on Friday.
2. LAST TIME OUT
North Florida set a program record against Warner with 110 points and picked up the biggest win in Division I history. The previous mark of 105 points had stood since 1997.
3. OFFENSIVE OUTBURSTS
North Florida averaged 65.2 points per game last season which is its highest offensive output since the 2003-04 season. UNF also shot a Division I-best 40.3 percent from the floor in 2018-19.
4. GIVE ME MOORE
Junior
Rhetta Moore hit a career-high with 19 points against Warner. She also had a career best three rebounds and three assists.
5. TRANSFERRING IN
The combination of five transfers - Bond, Gordon, Patrick, Eremeeva and Green - are averaging 18.8 points for the Opsreys.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
MIAMI (1-0)
- Miami opened the season with a 83-68 win against Jackson State on Sunday, Nov. 10.
- The lone senior, Beatrice Mompremier, returns as the NCAA double-doubles leader (25) and she added one with 16 points and 11 boards against Jackson State. She was named the Preseason ACC Player of the Year.
- The Hurricanes have made 10 straight postseason appearances including the second round the the NCAA Tournament last year.
- Coach Katie Meier added five freshmen in the offseason. The last time five freshmen all appeared in a game it was against North Florida in 2009.
FIU (1-1)
- FIU is coming off a 70-63 win at Georgia State on Monday.
- Chelsea Guimaraes leads the team after the pair of games with 16.0 points per game and 9.5 rebounds. Jiselle Thomas also averages double figures with 15.5 ppg.
- Senior Paula Orenes is the leading returning point-scorer from last season with 9.0 ppg. The Panthers finished 5-24 a season ago.
- The Panthers have seven newcomers including four true freshmen.
- FIU opened against FGCU, falling 100-54.
