Stetson Tops Volleyball Despite Cestero’s Record-Setting Night

Sophomore Sets UNF DI Four-Set Match Record for Kills

DeLAND, Fla. -  Friday night's match at Stetson saw some wild sets and a few explosive performances on both sides of the court.

But, when the final point was tallied the Hatters (4-11, 1-4 ASUN) topped UNF, 3-1, October 11 from the Edmunds Center.

Sophomore Solimar Cestero posted a career-high 27 kills, setting the UNF DI four-set match record in that category. UNF (7-12, 1-4 ASUN) won a marathon second set, 34-32, the highest set score in an Osprey match since 2008.

There were 45 tie scores and 22 lead changes on the night.

Stetson 3, UNF 1 (25-23, 32-34, 25-21, 25-23)

  • Set 2: UNF's longest set in over a decade saw 16 tie scores and 11 lead changes … UNF evaded seven SU set points … UNF's 21-18 set two lead was the first three-point lead for either side in the set … Down 24-22, UNF rattled off a 3-0 run … Neither team posted another 3-0 run until UNF did so from a 32-31 deficit … Cestero notched a kill to tie it before consecutive attack errors gave UNF the marathon set.
  • Set 3: Stetson's 22-19 lead was the first time either team led by three in the set as the third frame mirrored the second session … There were 15 ties and seven lead changes … Both teams notched match highs for hitting percentage … Stetson tallied a .343 hitting percentage while UNF notched a .279 clip.
  • Set 4: Stetson created an early edge that allowed it to stave off UNF's late push … There were four tie scores and two lead changes in the last set … Down 15-11, UNF came back to cut the deficit to 16-15 … UNF wouldn't get within one again, getting as close as 22-20 as SU hung on.

Wright's Words
"I'm proud of our fight tonight," head coach Kristen Wright said. "Our girls out-scored and out-dug Stetson. We found the block a few too many times and we had a few too many unforced errors. Again, I'm really proud of my girls. All of our freshman played really well, Taryn chipped away, Julianna excelled and Solimar led the way!"
