Ospreys Dispatch Dolphins in Straight Sets

UNF Completes Season Sweep of Crosstown Rivals

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - North Florida only needed the minimum for the second consecutive time against Jacksonville, downing the Dolphins (3-21, 2-10 ASUN) to complete a season-sweep of their rivals and garner another crucial-conference win.

The Ospreys (9-17, 4-7 ASUN) hit .297, Gabby O'Connell had a team-high 13 kills and senior Madilyn McCarty moved into sixth all-time in assists at UNF with 31 helpers Tuesday, Oct. 23 at Swisher Gymnasium.

UNF 3, JU 0  | 25-17, 25-21, 25-21 | Box Score

Behind the Box Score
  • Three straight errors and a kill from junior Taryn Griffey put UNF ahead, 4-0. Before the Dolphins could respond UNF carved out a sizable lead that they defended thanks to a .333 hitting percentage and five first-set kills from rookie Solimar Cestero.
  • The Dolphins stubbed their toes on seven service errors in the next session. UNF found itself behind at 10-9, but strong backline play by sophomore Madison Donnelly and McCarty's craftiness upfront springboarded the Ospreys to a 13-10 lead. JU tied it at 18, but UNF wouldn't budge, winning the last seven of 11 points.
  • Frame three saw 11 ties, the last coming after JU's Mallory Mattingly knotted it at 20 with a kill. Sophomore Emma Dixon and McCarty teamed up for a block and senior Asante Lopez dropped in an ace to piggyback a few JU errors and seal the set.

  • Griffey | Nine kills, .571 hitting percentage, two blocks

  • The last time Cestero had at least six kills was against JU September 25. The freshman had eight tonight.
  • Donnelly has posted double-digit digs in five of her last six contests.
  • This is UNF's fourth straight-sets win of the year.
  • Tuesday was the 15th double-digit kill performance of the season for O'Connell, tying Griffey for the team lead.
  • JU had 13 service errors, the second-most by any opponent UNF has faced this season.
  • Sophomore Devyn Wheeler broke the 500-kill milestone for her career, McCarty reached 200 kills at UNF and Griffey surpassed 100 blocks on the year.

Wright's Words
"I thought we did a good job when things got tight and a lot of people stepped up. Our libero, Donnelly, stepped up tonight. We had different people at different times [contribute] and we kept things loose while being confident. Our play on the outside was outstanding; we put a huge emphasis on the outside the whole game. Solimar was back in the lineup and had a nice week in practice and earned her spot back and you can see why, she tore it up."

McCarty on Moving up the Career Charts
"I think, especially with this year being a captain and being a setter, in general it is a leadership role because you do control so much on and off the court. I think it has been really special these past three years to work with all of these girls because they are so fun to play with and the coaches give so much instruction, which makes my job easy."

Up Next
