McCarty Eclipses Milestone in Loss at FGCU

Senior Becomes Seventh Osprey With Over 2,000 Assists

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Things were deadlocked at 23-23 in sets one and two, but four crucial points went they way of FGCU as the Ospreys (8-17, 3-6 ASUN) were upended by the Eagles (16-6, 8-1 ASUN) Friday, Oct. 19.

FGCU 3, UNF 0 | 23-25, 23-25, 15-25 | Box Score

Behind the Box Score
  • Leading 19-15, FGCU got into a rhythm late to snuff out UNF's hot-hitting start in the first set. The Eagles outscored UNF 10-4 to take the opener, despite three kills from sophomore Emma Dixon, junior Taryn Griffey and freshman Kirby Smith.
  • McCarty posted 12 assists in the first set, eclipsing 2,000 for her career.
  • It was was knotted 23-23 for the second time, but FGCU eked out the frame with a kill from Giovanna Borgiotti and a UNF attack error. The Eagles hit a match-high .400 in the second session.
  • The Ospreys established an early lead for the third-consecutive set. FGCU replied with a trio of Chelsey Lockey kills to surmount a two-point deficit and eventually take the set and the match.

Leaders By the Numbers
Notes
  • McCarty is now the seventh UNF player to have more than 2,000 career assists. She is currently seventh in UNF history in that category, just 66 away from moving into sixth. Teri Taylor (1991-92) is currently sixth all-time for the Ospreys. McCarty has 3,255 assists if you include her 1,229 assists from Winthrop.
  • The Ospreys had five aces to just one for FGCU.
  • Devyn Wheeler is only three kills from 200. She would be the third Osprey with over 200 this season.
  • McCarty, a setter, hit .538. This is the fifth time she has hit over .500 this season (minimum 10 attempts).
  • FGCU is second in the ASUN behind conference leading Kennesaw State. UNF is sixth at 3-6.

Wright's Words
"We played a stellar first two sets; we had a clear game plan and it worked, winning the serve-receive battle in the first two. We made a few unforced errors in the clutch that compounded, and in the third I think we lacked drive and focus. The girls are naturally bummed, but they know that it's in their control. We're very well prepared going into our Liberty match. It will be a good match and pivotal for both teams in the ASUN."
