North Florida's Season Ends at ASUN Tournament

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - North Florida softball had another tough match up in the ASUN Tournament as the second-seeded Kennesaw State Owls hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth to get the 2-1 win on Thursday afternoon. The Ospreys then fell, 3-0, to FGCU in the elimination game in the second game of the day.

Kennesaw State
  • Both starting pitchers were in control through the first six innings of the game as neither offense could generate much. The Owls and Ospreys entered the seventh inning with three hits each after the defenses stepped up behind the starting pitchers to help keep the game scoreless.
  • Cocuzza slammed her sixth home run of the season in the top of the seventh to give the Ospreys the 1-0 lead before the Owls turned to Logan Viers who finished the game with three innings of shut out ball to earn the win.
  • Trailing 1-0 entering the bottom of the seventh inning, but after Chandler Griffin hit a triple with one out, Kennesaw State tied the contest on an RBI groundout from Jessie Mullen. 
  • North Florida brought on Amanda Blanchard to pitch for Blourne and she was able to keep the score tied in the eighth inning. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Mullen stepped to the plate and drove a 1-1 pitch to the opposite field for her fifth home run of the season.
FGCU
  • The Eagles got on the board in the second on a single from Jesse Verderese that brought in what would be the game-winning run.
  • North Florida had chances in four different innings with runners in scoring position, but was unable to convert to runs.
  • FGCU added to its lead in the top of the seventh with some small ball runs for the 3-0 lead.
  • In the bottom of the seventh, UNF got two onboard, but a final pop out gave FGCU the advantage.
  • Senior Logan Green tossed a complete game, her 19th of the season, with just five hits, three walks and a strikeout.

QUICK HITS
- Freshman Kayla McGory extended her reach base streak to six games, while Penrod and Ashley Niesman have reached base safely in three straight contests.

- North Florida set a program record for double plays turned with 27 on the season.
- Penrod grabbed the single-season hit record for the Ospreys after finishing the season with 87. The previous mark was 82.
- With her .422 average, Penrod also takes the fifth spot in the UNF single-season record book.
- The Ospreys recorded 30 wins for the second time under head coach Marcie Hickey and for the fourth time in Division I history.
