Ospreys Outlast Spartans in Triple Overtime

JACKSONVILLE - North Florida women's basketball outlasted USC Upstate as the Ospreys swept the series with a 77-74 win in triple overtime on Saturday afternoon at UNF Arena. It was the first time this season that UNF has trailed at halftime and rallied back to win the game.

The Short Story: Junior Simone Brown laid in a last second basket in regulation to send the game to over time before the Ospreys got out in front in the third extra frame thanks to back-to-back baskets from Jaiveonna Norris and a free throw from Adrienne Jackson to grab the win.

OPENING TIP
  • This is the first sweep of Upstate since both teams joined the ASUN.
  • It was the first 3OT in UNF Division I history, while it is the first game to go three extra in ASUN play since February 2005.
  • Leading the team for the first time this season, Norris recorded her first career double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds to go along with two assists, three blocks and two steals.
  • Junior Tesh Hanson came back after an injury to add 14 points, three assists and five rebounds.
  • Simone Brown powered to 12 points with four assists and three steals, while Sierra Shepherd had 11 points with a game-high five assists.
  • Claire Ioannidis and Jackson both had 10 points, while Jackson narrowly missed a double-double as she had a career-high eight rebounds.

First Half Trends
  • North Florida trailed at half, 28-24 as the Ospreys shot just 31 percent in the opening two quarters.
  • UNF held the edge off the glass, 21-13, but the Spartans totaled 11 points off of 12 Ospreys turnovers.
Second Half Trends
  • In the third quarter alone, the game saw eight lead changes with Upstate holding a 41-40 edge after three.
  • The final frame saw four tie scores with Brown's lay in with one second to play pushing the game into overtime at 55-all.
  • Before the extra time, the game was tied five times with 14 lead changes.
Overtime
  • In the first overtime, a free throw gave the visitors a 61-59 lead before Ioannidis drove the lane on the opposite end of the floor to knot it at 61-all to go into the second extra.
  • North Florida got out in front on a three-point play from Hanson before the Spartans answered back to tie it again at 66.
  • Hanson dished a pass to the outside where Shepherd hit a triple, but Upstate had an answer as Jefferson hit a trey to knot it again.
  • The final frame saw two more tie scores, but thanks to successful outings at the free throw line from Jackson and Ioannidis, 
  • On Upstate's next possession, Brittney Delva drove to the basket by Maiya Rumph threw up a block to ice the game and snap a six-game skid for UNF.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
  • North Florida recorded season highs in blocks (8) and steals (14). All but one Osprey who saw the floor picked up a steal with three picking up three.
  • Rumph totaled eight rebounds, two assists and three blocks including the final stop at the end of the game to stop Upstate from scoring the game-tying basket. She is now tied for fifth in the UNF Division I recordbook with 47 blocks.
  • UNF owned a 49-31 edge off the glass with 19 offensive boards.
  • It is the second time this season that five or more players have hit double figures.
NEXT UP
North Florida stays at home to play NJIT as it works to avenge an early season loss to the Highlanders. UNF defeated NJIT both times last season.
