JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The North Florida Softball team won its final game of the regular season, 4-3 over USC Upstate Sunday afternoon at the UNF Softball Complex.
The Ospreys (20-29, 6-12 A-Sun) close out their 2016 season on a positive note, after failing to qualify for this year's A-Sun Conference Tournament next week in Fort Myers.
North Florida jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first. Senior
Katie Mandigo started off with a RBI double to the center field wall, scoring freshman
Navia Penrod. Freshman
Minnie Cocuzza also doubled in that inning, bringing home senior
Stacy McClelland and Mandigo for a 3-0 lead.
USC Upstate chipped away with a solo shot in the top of the fourth, before tying the game at 3-3 with two runs in the top of the fifth.
The Ospreys responded in the bottom half of the fifth, with senior
Shelby Duncan scoring senior
Lexi Taylor on a sacrifice fly to take a 4-3 lead, which proved to be the eventual final.
Penrod finished 2-for-3 on the day with a run scored to kead the offense, while
Logan Green earned the win in the circle for the Ospreys, allowing two hits in two innings of relief effort for North Florida.
