ATHENS, Ga. - North Florida women's tennis gears up to face fifth-seeded Georgia in the NCAA Tournament beginning on Friday afternoon at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. Should UNF advance, it will face the winners of Wake Forest and Baylor.
The Ospreys are appearing in the NCAA Tournament for the fifth time and fourth time in five seasons. The Ospreys reached the tournament in 2010, 2012, 2013 and 2015. In 2010, UNF went to Florida State and made three trips to Miami in its other appearances. UNF, who won its second straight Atlantic Sun Regular Season title, earned its trip to the NCAA Tournament by winning the Atlantic Sun Tournament with a 4-2 victory against FGCU. This was the third time under head coach
Audra Cohen in which the Ospreys swept both the regular season and the tournament crowns.
Atlantic Sun Player of the Year
Noemi Hemmerich went 12-7 this season while playing on the top singles court. The Ospreys also present a challenge on the four court where
Luise Intert is 11-1. Hemmerich pairs with
Quetzali Vazquez in the No. 1 spot with a 9-4 mark, while the No. 2 duo of Intert and freshman
Rafaela Gomez are 10-7. This will be the first meeting between UNF and the Bulldogs.
Georgia, which enters NCAA postseason play with a 20-4 record on the year, has won 10 of 11 home matches this season. The Bulldogs have also not lost to a team ranked outside of the top five at the time of the match. The Bulldogs bring with them three All-SEC honorees: Ellen Perez (first team), Caroline Brinson (second team) and Kennedy Shaffer (second team). Additionally, Georgia has four ranked singles players and two ranked doubles pairs.
Wake Forest, ranked 26th, is 19-9 on the year and is led into postseason play by All-ACC second-teamer Kimmy Guerin. The 40th-ranked Baylor Bears are the only team in the Athens regional that have played Georgia in the postseason, with the Bulldogs emerging with a 5-0 win in 2001. Baylor is 17-14 this season with a 13-7 record in Big 12 play.
