STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern (30-20) held North Florida (31-17) scoreless for only the third time this season in a 2-0 shutout at J.I. Clement Stadium. The loss for the Ospreys is only the third to the Eagles since 2011.
A total of four pitchers combined for the five-hit shutout. The bulk of the work was done by starting pitcher, Brian Eichhorn, who threw 92 pitches in seven strong innings. He struck out five batters and walked only one. The freshman improved to 4-2 on the season.
Two of the five Osprey hits came off the bat of senior
Nick Karmeris who finished the night 2-for-4. He now leads the team with 19 multiple-hit games and has two or more hits in six of the last seven games. He ups his batting average to .300 on the season.
Only two hits mattered most for Georgia Southern, who captured its initial lead on a CJ. Ballard's RBI double in the third inning. The Eagles tacked on another run in the sixth inning on a bloop RBI single from Jordan Wren. The single was one of two hits for Wren on the night.
Osprey starting pitcher
Frank German made his first start in over a month and took the tough luck loss. He allowed one run over 2.1 innings. Redshirt junior
Tyler DuPont pitched the next 3.2 innings and struck out three batters.
Eichhorn retired the first 10 batters he faced before giving up a hit to
Dakota Higdon in the fourth. Double plays in consecutive innings allowed Eichhorn to face the minimum over the first five innings.
Catcher
Blake Voyles continued to have success against Georgia Southern with his second double in as many days. In the first meeting against the Eagles last year, he hit a bases-clearing, walk-off double in the ninth inning. All three doubles in his career have come against Georgia Southern.
In the field, the Ospreys matched a season-high with three double plays turned.
Eichhorn retired the first 10 batters he faced.
Dakota Higdon recorded UNF's first hit with a single to centerfield in the top of the fourth. Eichhorn worked out of jams in the sixth and seventh innings, stranding a total of three runners in scoring position in the two frames.
The North Florida bullpen got a pair of scoreless innings from
Anthony Delaney and
Daniel Moritz. Delaney struck out two of the five batters he faced in his first appearance since March 6
th. Moritz hasn't yielded a run in his last five appearances and lowered his ERA to 2.31.
The Ospreys get back to Atlantic Sun Conference play this weekend when they host USC Upstate in the final three home games of the year. The series opener is Friday with a first pitch scheduled for 6:00 p.m. The series is being presented by Bank of England.
