JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – North Florida recorded its third shutout of the season, a 5-0 blanking of Stetson (17-18, 1-5 A-Sun) in the finale of the three-game Atlantic Sun Conference series. The Ospreys register their second weekend sweep of the year and now have won nine-straight games at Harmon Stadium.
Freshman starting pitcher
Austin Drury bettered the two stellar starting pitching performances turned in by
Bryan Baker and
Tyler DuPont in the series. The first-year lefthander pitched a season-high 7.1 innings, and struck out four batters to record the shutout victory. It marked the third time in his last four starts that he pitched into the seventh inning and finished the day with 102 pitches.
Reliever
Matthew Naylor and closer
Corbin Olmstead preserved the shutout, tossing the 1.2 innings of hitless baseball. Naylor stranded a pair of runners in the top of the eighth, inducing two fly balls to keep Stetson off the scoreboard. Olmstead retired the Hatters in order and recorded his 24
th strikeout of the season.
The Osprey offense was propelled by a familiar swing, the one of freshman
Chris Berry. The first baseman came through in the bottom of the fourth with a two-out, two RBI single breaking a scoreless tie. Stetson starting pitcher, Logan Gilbert walked the bases loaded, all with two outs and gave up the go-ahead two-RBI single Berry, his third and fourth RBIs of the series.
Another two-out hit off the bat of
Kyle Brooks in the bottom of the sixth, gave the Ospreys a 4-0 advantage after six. Brooks shot a double into the gap in left center field that scored Berry and
Alex Merritt. The Ospreys added their fifth and final run in the eighth when Merritt scored on a two-out Stetson error.
Merritt was the only multiple-hit performer in a North Florida lineup that accumulated eight hits against a quartet of Stetson arms. Merritt was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored on the day.
Catcher
Keith Skinner, who scored the game's first run of the contest crossed the plate five times in the series. He was 6-for-9 with five runs scored and two RBIs against the Hatters. He leads the Atlantic Sun with a .422 batting average.
At the plate, Olmstead extended his reached base streak to 31 games with a single up the middle in the first inning.
The Ospreys turned two double plays in the game, moving their season total to 42 on the year. Coming into the series, they ranked sixth in the country in twin killings.
