JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Another shutdown performance by right-hander
Bryan Baker and the second big offensive day in as many games from
Nick Karmeris powered North Florida (22-14, 3-4 A-Sun) to a 6-2 series-opening victory over Stetson (17-16, 1-3 A-Sun). The Ospreys have now won seven-straight games at Harmon Stadium and five in-a-row against the Hatters.
Baker set the tone for the Ospreys early, fanning the first four batters he faced. He needed just 10 pitches in the top of the first to strikeout the side. North Florida then came to the plate and scored three runs in the bottom of the first and never looked back.
The first Stetson hit didn't come until the top of the sixth inning and for the eighth time in nine starts Baker fanned five or more batters. He threw 102 pitches in six innings, allowed only one hit, struck out six and surrendered just an unearned run. He improves to 3-2 on the season and notches his 11
th career victory, tied for the eighth most in the school's D-1 era (2006-present).
Karmeris who tallied four RBIs on Tuesday night thanks to his go-ahead grand slam in the fifth, added four more RBIs to his season total Friday night. After the Hatters cut the Osprey lead in half in the top of the eighth, Karmeris blasted his eighth home run of the season, a two-run shot to give North Florida a 6-2 lead. He finished the night, 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs. He is now second on the team with 33 RBIs on the year.
Seniors
Corbin Olmstead and
Keith Skinner provided RBI singles in the three-run, first inning rally. Skinner's team-leading 13
th double of the year plated the first North Florida run. Olmstead followed up with a single to right-center field before Karmeris capped the inning with a bloop, RBI single to left field.
Olmstead went 3-for-4 on the night and drove in his team-best 41
st run of the season. He is now reached base safely in 29-straight games. The three-hit night was his third of 2016. Skinner, the A-Sun's top hitter coming into the contest, collected two more hits for his 15
th multiple-hit effort this year. He finished the night 2-for-4 with a double, a walk and two runs scored. He ups his season average to .411.
Senior
Daniel Moritz came on in relief in the bottom of the eighth, stranded a runner in scoring position and recorded the final out of the frame. He worked a scoreless ninth, fanned a total of two in 1.1 innings and was credited with his first career save.
Both Stetson runs came off the bat of second baseman Kevin Fagan. The senior broke up Baker's no-no in the sixth with an RBI single to left field and later cut the Osprey lead in half in the eighth with an RBI single up the middle.
With the three-run first inning, the Ospreys improve to 11-2 when scoring in their first turn at the plate.
The middle game will see Osprey lefty
Tyler DuPont (2-2) pitted against the right-handed Mitchell Jordan (3-4) of Stetson. Game time is slated for 1:00 p.m. and can be seen live on ASunTV or heard live on 92.5 FM.
