@OspreySB Sweeps Day One of UCF Tournament

ORLANDO, Fla. The North Florida Softball team defeated LIU-Brooklyn 5-4 in eight innings, before beating La Salle 9-1 in five innings Friday at the UCF Tournament in Orlando, Fla.

In the first game of the day, the Ospreys took an early 1-0 lead, but LIU responded and took a 4-1 lead going into the bottom of the fifth. The Ospreys tied up the contest with a three-run fifth inning. Senior Stacy McClelland started the rally with a two-RBI single, scoring senior Katie Mandigo and freshman Navia Penrod. Freshman Jenna Brownell then scored McClelland with a RBI double, tying the game at 4-4.

Following three scoreless innings, the Ospreys completed the comeback in walk-off fashion, as Mandigo singled home freshman Minnie Cocuzza for the 5-4 victory.

Senior Janet Snipe earned the win in the first contest, throwing 3.2 scoreless innings.

In the second contest of the day, the Ospreys used some timely hitting and took advantage of some La Salle miscues to take a 4-0 lead after three innings, highlighted by a RBI double by senior Shelby Duncan.

After giving up a run in the top of the fourth, North Florida put together a five run bottom of the fifth to earn the walk-off 9-1 win via run-rule against the Explorers, capped by a two-RBI single by Mandigo.

Earning the win for the Ospreys was junior Katie Beth Gordon, who threw five innings while allowing only three hits and striking out three.

Play at the UCF Tournament for the Ospreys concludes tomorrow with games against Middle Tennessee and South Dakota at 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., respectively.
