Cool Shooting and Turnovers Hinder Ospreys in Loss to CSU Bakersfield

QUICK GLANCE
Score: North Florida 54, CSU Bakersfield 77
Final Boxscore (pdf)
Records: North Florida (3-4) | CSU Bakersfield (4-2)
Location: Nutter Center (Dayton, Ohio)
The Short Story: The North Florida men's basketball team committed 24 turnovers and shot just 36 percent (18-50) from the floor in a tough 77-54 loss to CSU Bakersfield on Saturday in action at the Men Against Breast Cancer (MABC) Classic.

OPENING TIP
- Dallas Moore was the lone Osprey in double digits finishing with 19 points including a 4-for-6 effort from long distance. He hit 7 of 12 field goal attempts while also handing out a team best three assists
- The Ospreys had sluggish starts to both halves with the first basket of the opening half coming on a Moore triple at the 15:30 mark and Karlos Odum hitting a layup with 12:20 on the clock in the second half marking the first field goal of the frame.
- Bakersfield had four players reach double figures led by 18 (8-12 FGs) from Jaylin Airington.
- CSUB finished 24-9 last season and returned four starters and 8 of top 9 scorers from their WAC Champion/NCAA participant squad

GAME TRENDS
-  The Roadrunners raced out of the gate scoring seven straight points during a 10-3 run to open the game. All three of UNF's points in the span came from the charity stripe.
- The Ospreys would eventually trim the deficit to five points at 22-17 following another Moore trey, but CSUB would outscore UNF 14-3 over the next five minutes to seize control of the momentum. Senior Aaron Bodager's "3" marked the Ospreys only points during the stretch.
- UNF settled down late in the half, closing the frame on a 9-3 spurt to pull to 41-32 at the halftime break.
- Bakersfield opened the second half by scoring the first 12 points and pushing their lead to over 20 as the Ospreys went 0-for-6 from the floor. Romelo Banks ended the scoreless spell with a pair of FTs after 4:30 minutes of action, but it was three more minutes until Odum's lay-up halted the FG drought.
- CSUB maintained a 20-plus point advantage for much of the remainder of the game, building as large as a 27-point lead (77-50) before UNF netted the last four points to reach the final score.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
- In the first half, 6 of UNF's 11 FGM were from beyond the 3-point arc. The Ospreys also finished with a season high 9 treys.
- CSUB became just second team to outrebound the Ospreys, posting a 34-29 edge on the glass
- The Roadrunners utilized a 38-18 advantage for points in the paint while also posting an 18-4 lead in fastbreak scoring.
- UNF has now committed 20+ turnovers in four games including back-to-back contests
- Bakersfield collected 12 steals, the most by a UNF opponent this season
- 10 of 12 Ospreys got into the scoring column with 9 of 10 scoring 6 points or less

SAY WHAT...
"This was not so much of a loss as it was a whooping. They were dominating and we were disappointing. I give credit to Bakersfield for dominating us in every aspect and showing more passion and purpose than us. I'm not sure why it happened but I will look at everything to figure out how I can better prepare our team. This was definitely not the same team that played last night against North Dakota. We have struggled with turnovers all season and that's not something we've dealt with here. We just have to keep working on it and figure out ways to correct it because it makes it very difficult to compete and defend against good teams with that many turnovers. The good thing about basketball is that we don't have time to dwell on this because we have to regroup and refocus and be ready to play again tomorrow." -- Head coach Matthew Driscoll

NEXT UP
- The Ospreys wrap up play in the MABC Classic with a game Sunday at 4:30 p.m. against tournament host Wright State. The game will not be carried on local Jacksonville radio because of Jacksonville Jaguars coverage but can be watched on ESPN3.
