Final Boxscore (pdf)
JACKSONVILLE -- A seven-minute scoring drought in the first half proved costly for the North Florida men's basketball team in a tough 94-56 loss to Miami on Wednesday night in UNF Arena.
The Ospreys (1-2) fell behind quickly as the Hurricanes (2-0) scored the first seven points of the contest. UNF finally got on the board on a floating layup from
Dallas Moore with 17:45 left in the first half. North Florida would slowly chip away at the Miami lead and closed the gap to 21-16 with 11 minutes left in the period.
UM would then open up a 14-0 run to break the game open as the Ospreys had three turnovers and eight missed shots over the next seven minutes of action. A free throw from
Romelo Banks ended the squad's scoring drought but UNF was only able to muster four points in the final 11 minutes of the period and trailed 48-20 at the break.
The Hurricanes continued their torrid pace to start the second half, using an 11-0 surge over the opening four minutes of play to build a 59-20 advantage. North Florida shot 34 percent from the floor for the game and only 29 percent from beyond the three-point line. UNF did convert 6 of 14 trey tries (43 percent) in the second half but were unable to overcome Miami's 52 points in the paint an 54 percent shooting from the field.
Moore led the way for UNF finishing with 12 points, while freshman
Wajid Aminu netted a career high 11 points and six boards along with blocking a pair of shots. Additionally, fellow freshman
Garrett Sams extended his double-digit scoring streak to three games after tallying 10 points on the night.
Miami saw five players reach double digits led by 17 points from Davon Reed. Ja'Quan Newton added 16 points and 7 assists while Kamari Murphy contributed eight points and game-high nine boards.
North Florida continues its hectic opening week of the season with a game against LSU in Baton Rouge, La., on Friday night. The game marks UNF's fourth contest in an eight-day span.

Quotable...
"There's an old saying that your mother said there would be days like this, but my mother was about as good a human being as there was on the other but she never told me about a day like this. Tonight was an onslaught and you've got to give Miami so much credit. I saw them on film and felt like they were really, really talented and had great team chemistry. I thought they shared the ball well and played well together and it definitely showed tonight. They are an unbelievable team and Coach (Jim) Larranaga is going to lead those guys on a deep run in the tournament and they are going to shock some people. You can see why their RPI is so high. Nobody will be sleeping on them after the preseason because they have all the pieces. Their two guards are as good as there are in the country.
"We had some chances when the score was 21-16 to get even closer and we just didn't convert. I told the guys in games like this you have to make those plays because that's what good teams do. Give Miami credit for doing what they had do, not only in defending Dallas, but also against our whole team." -- Head coach
Matthew Driscoll
About the 1st Half Drought
"They were scoring and getting out in transition. We as a team took some selfish shots. We just came down and just dribbled and shot without running any offense or slowing things down and that's what killed us. Even I came down and split a ball screen and had Garrett wide open in the corner but I took a tough layup instead of passing him the ball for a better shot. Stuff like that hurts us in the long run especially against a good team. We need to execute because mistakes like that lead to big runs." --
