Final Boxscore (pdf)NEWARK, N.J. – Behind a program record 20 three-pointers, the North Florida basketball team swooped past Atlantic Sun newcomer NJIT for the 94-80 victory Sunday at the Fleisher Athletic Center.
Despite having to wait an extra day to play because of a snow blizzard along the East Coast, UNF (17-6, 6-0 ASun) was not cooled down as all seven players that saw action in the game connected on a trey and the team finished 20 of 44 from beyond the arc.The win was UNF's fourth straight road win and seventh consecutive win overall.
Dallas Moore led the way scoring 28 points including four three-pointers while also handing out eight assists and grabbing six rebounds.
Beau Beech added 20 points along with a team high seven rebounds while
Trent Mackey (12),
Aaron Bodager (11) and
Demarcus Daniels (11) also reached double digits.
The Ospreys were not only impressive on offense but also excelled defensively by holding the Highlanders (11-9, 2-3) to just 2 of 12 shooting from the three-point arc highlighted by holding Damon Lynn, the conference's leading three-point shooter, to an 0-8 performance and snapped his streak of 71 straight games with a trey.
"I was extremely proud of the focus and effort that the guys played with tonight," said head coach
Matthew Driscoll. "One thing for sure was that our guys were locked into the defensive game plan to limit their three-point opportunities. Our solid defense also led to us getting into a great flow offensively. When we shoot the ball like we did tonight, we are really tough to guard and beat. I thought the team executed the game plan excellently."
North Florida raced out to a 12-4 lead as NJIT made just two of its first seven shots. The hot-shooting from distance began in that run as Moore had one and Mackey tallied a pair of treys. NJIT battled back and pulled within a basket, 14-12, before the Ospreys used a 17-8 surge capped by three consecutive 3-pointers to build a double-digit lead.
The Ospreys, who equaled their season average with 12 threes in the first half, kept the pressure on and carried a 50-36 lead into intermission.
A quick 9-1 spurt to start the second half pushed the Osprey lead to over 20 points just two minutes into the action. UNF would lead by as much as 24, but the Highlanders scored eight straight points to trim the deficit to 16. NJIT also made a surge in the final minutes closing to within 11 points at 91-80, before Bodager drilled his third trey of the night to close the scoring.
In the game, Beech became UNF's all-time career leader in steals after tallying his 136th. In addition, Moore upped his career point total to 1,418, the second most in program history and the highest point total in the Division I era.
North Florida next returns home to face rival FCGU on Saturday night at UNF Arena, in the game that concludes the first half of its Atlantic Sun Conference schedule.
