Final Boxscore (pdf)YPSILANTI, Mich. -- The North Florida basketball team closed out non-conference play Saturday afternoon with an impressive 82-77 road victory over Eastern Michigan at the EMU Convocation Center.
UNF improved to 11-6 on the year, marking the most non-conference victories in the all-time program history.
Beau Beech drilled five three-pointers and led the team with 23 points, while
Chris Davenport nearly recorded a triple-double finishing with 15 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists. The Ospreys shot 53 percent from the floor for the game and made 11 three-pointers, the 13th game this season the squad as netted a double figure total for treys.
Demarcus Daniels also scored 15 points for the Ospreys and became the program's all-time leader in blocked shots with 146, following a smashing swat in the first half.
Dallas Moore joined the double figure parade adding 14 points in the victory.
The Eagles fell to 8-5 on the year, suffering their first home loss of the season after winning six straight.EMU had six players reach double digits led by 18 from James Thompson IV.
"I was really, really proud of the way our guys battled and battled throughout the game," said head coach
Matthew Driscoll. "I thought we were relentless down the stretch and just did the things we needed to do in order to earn the win. Defensively, we got stops when he needed them and guarded especially well in the second half. It is an awesome accomplishment with the challenging schedule we've played for our team to have 11 victories heading into league play."
The game was competitive throughout with neither team holding larger than a seven-point advantage. The two squads traded the lead over the opening 10 minutes of play before the Eagles grabbed the momentum with a 9-3 surge. Minutes later the Ospreys responded with a 10-3 spurt over a two-minute span to retake the lead, 40-39, with just under three minutes to play in the half. UNF held a 46-45 advantage at the half.
The Ospreys scored the first five points of the second half drawing a quick timeout from EMU. North Florida would push its lead to 63-56 after a basket by Daniels with 10:45 showing on the clock. The Eagles answered with six straight points before Davenport halted the run with a jumper in the lane. UNF would maintain a slim lead over the next several minutes but another six-point push by EMU put the Ospreys down, 77-75, with 1:43 remaining.
Beech drilled a three-pointer to put UNF back in front and then the Osprey's defense held the Eagles scoreless the rest of the way as Davenport and Moore made baskets in the closing minute to secure the victory.
North Florida wraps up its current four-game road stretch Wednesday with their Atlantic Sun Conference opener against Stetson in DeLand, Fla.
