HIGH POINT, N.C. – The North Florida Women's Soccer team dropped a road contest with High Point 2-0 Sunday afternoon at Vert Stadium in High Point, N.C.
The Ospreys (1-4-0) locked down defensively following an early goal by the Panthers (4-0-2) but were unable to equalize, High Point pushed the lead to 2-0 off of a well-placed corner kick in the 83
rd minute to seal the win.
"High Point plays a physical style of soccer and put a lot of numbers around the ball. I'm proud of how hard our players fought and it is a game of chances," said coach
Robin Confer. "I felt their first goal was preventable on our end and had we put one of our chances away, the game changes a bit."
The Panthers first goal came in the 9
th minute when Becca Rolfe fired a shot from about 35 yards out, finding the top-left corner of the goal.
The Ospreys had several good runs but couldn't find the back of the net. In the 39
th minute, sophomore
Kayla Gray beat the defense but her shot went wide left of the net.
In the 74
th minute, freshman
Gabby Daudet found herself with a one-on-one opportunity with the High Point keeper, but the keeper was able to charge the play and deflect the shot away from the net.
In the 83
rd minute, High Point got the 2-0 lead when a corner kick landed just inside the six yard box, Michele Micciche got her foot on it to find the back of the net.
Soon after, freshman
Krista Colubiale almost found the net for the Ospreys, but her attempt in the box was cut out by the High Point defense.
"We unfortunately gave up a late goal as we were getting ready to push more numbers forward, added Confer. "We have two big games coming up this weekend and looking forward to training this week."
The Ospreys remain on the road for their next two matches, facing, FIU on Friday and Miami on Sunday.
