Boxscore (PDF) DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – University of North Florida volleyball earned its ninth consecutive win on Tuesday night with a 3-1 (25-27, 25-19, 25-23, 25-21) victory over Bethune-Cookman at Moore Gymnasium. With Tuesday night's triumph, UNF set a new program Division I record for longest winning streak.
Heading into Tuesday's match, the previous longest winning streak in UNF's Division I history was eight matches set Oct. 26-Nov. 16, 2012 during head coach
Steve Loeswick's first season.
Ambre Desaulnay and
Carina Hoff led the Ospreys. Desaulnay registered an 11-kill, 12-dig double-double, while Hoff tallied 18 kills.
Tessa Alyman and
Katarina Raicevic each added 14 and 13 kills, respectively.
Carinne Turner put up 35 assists, while
Kimberly Ferguson added in 21 digs.
UNF hit .340 for the match, making 67 kills with 66 assists and 62 digs
Delicia Pierre, who tallied her 1,000 career kill on Tuesday, paced the Wildcats with 17 kills. Hazel Ortiz-Rosado tallied 47 assists and 13 digs, while Normarie made 17 digs.
Bethune-Cookman hit .301 for the match with 59 kills, 56 assists, 61 digs and 11.0 blocks.
In an explosive first set, both teams hit .400-or-better and there were 10 ties. UNF hit .439 for the set, making 20 kills, while Bethune-Cookman hit .400 with 22 kills. After Bethune-Cookman had a late 22-19 lead, the Ospreys fought back to even the set at 22-22 off an Alyman kill. As the teams traded points, consecutive Pierre kills lifted Bethune-Cookman to the first-set victory.
A key five-point run midway through the second set separated UNF from the Wildcats. Trailing by one, a kill from Alyman sparked the run that put the Ospreys up 19-15. Although Bethune-Cookman made it a two-point set twice, a kill from Hoff started a set-ending four-point run that allowed UNF to even the match at 1-1.
UNF battled back from a slow start to the third set and eventually used a four-point run to tie the set at 17-17. After trading points, a kill from Raicevic and consecutive Desaulnay aces put UNF ahead 24-22. Bethune-Cookman stayed alive in the set with a Phylecia Armstrong kill, but an set-ending block from Alyman and
Morgan Van Alstine gave UNF the critical third-set victory and a 2-1 advantage in the mathc.
Several runs towards the end of the fourth set were key in the Ospreys' victory. Trailing by one, kills from Hoff and Raicevic allowed UNF to gain a 19-18 advantage. Although an Ortiz-Rosado kill evened the set at 19-19, a Wildcat service error was the first of three-straight UNF points as the Ospreys went up 22-19. After a Pierre kill made it a two-point set, a Wildcat ball handling error and an Alyman kill allowed UNF to gain a match-point 24-20 lead. Bethune-Cookman kept the match going with a Destiny Hudson kill, but Alyman registered a kill on the next point to end the match.
UNF returns to action with road matches at USC Upstate at 6 p.m., on Friday and a 3 p.m., match at Kennesaw State on Saturday.
