JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 60
th minute penalty kick goal by sophomore
Sarah Wasser gave the North Florida women's soccer team a 1-0 win over Georgia Southern Sunday afternoon at Hodges Stadium.
The Ospreys (2-7-0) closed out their non-conference schedule on a high-note with the win, and will now turn their attention to Atlantic Sun play.
"Throughout the non-conference season we've remained positive and worked hard. We knew we were close in a lot of games. We knew that eventually something is going to fall for us. I thought we played well against Furman on Friday, they're a great team and we were a little unlucky there, today the girls really stepped up and played hard," said head coach
Robin Confer. "Sarah [Wasser] put the PK away and I thought we defended well, we bent a little bit but didn't break. We got the shutout and I'm proud of them."
North Florida and Georgia Southern battled hard for 90 minutes but the Ospreys defense earned the shutout. In the 15
th minute, North Florida had their first chance at the net when sophomore
Mikki Olson took a good run into the Eagle box but her shot went just over the bar.
The Ospreys next great chance came in the 60
th minute when freshman
Krista Colubiale nearly beat the Georgia Southern defense, but an errant slide tackle in the box earned North Florida the penalty kick, which Wasser buried in the left side of the net to break the deadlock.
North Florida held strong throughout the second half, goalkeepers
Victoria Ekeli and
Susie Ford combined for four saves on 10 shots faced.
Overall, the Ospreys lead the shot advantage 11-10, while the teams were even at on-target shots at four.
North Florida is back in action next Sunday with the start of Atlantic Sun play when they head to Fort Myers, Fla. to face FGCU on Saturday, September 26
th at 7 p.m.
"Anytime you start conference play it is almost like a new season and that's what we are approaching it as. We got a little momentum today going into facing FGCU," added Confer. "We know they're going to be difficult but I think we can go in there and just play."
