Box Score (PDF)SPARTANBURG, S.C. – North Florida (38-13, 13-4) scored the first 11 runs in game two against USC Upstate (15-33, 4-13), aiding in a 12-6 victory. The Ospreys have now posted double-digit win streaks twice this season and capture their fifth Atlantic Sun series win of the season.
Trent Higginbothem set a new career-high with five RBIs and was 3-for-5 at the plate for the Ospreys. He is now second in the Atlantic Sun with 57 RBIs on the season and four behind teammate
Donnie Dewees who has a league-best 61. Dewees had another three-hit day and scored his 76
th run of the season which is two shy of the school record held by Kyle Catrett. He also extended his hitting streak to 27 games with a double in the bottom of the first inning.
Sophomore right-hander
Bryan Baker won his fifth game of the year and put forth his second quality start of 2015. He pitched six innings allowed only two runs and struck out two. He faced the minimum over the first three innings before Daniel Fickas recorded the first hit of the day for USC Upstate in the bottom of the fourth. He went on to retire the last seven batters he faced and is now 5-2 on the season.
The Osprey offense jumped out to an 11-0 lead and scored six runs in their first three turns at the plate. With two outs in the bottom of the first inning,
Nick Karmeris cracked his fourth home run of the spring to give the Ospreys a quick, 3-0 lead. The outfielder finished the day 2-for-5 with a career-best, four RBIs.
After Dewees' RBI ground out in the top of the second, Higginbothem delivered a two-out double down the left field line to make the score 6-0.
North Florida put the game out of reach in the fourth when they sent 10 batters to the plate and added five more runs. The rally spelled the end of the day for Spartan starter Blake Whitney who was charged with nine runs. Higginbothem had his second, two-RBI hit of the game to highlight the scoring in the fourth. James Abbatinozzi had one of his two hits on the afternoon that scored Karmeris for the 11
th Osprey run of the game.
USC Upstate committed three more errors, upping their series total to five. Spartan relievers Coleman Arrowwod, Cody Brittain and Tresco Shannon combined for four innings of scoreless relief.
