Box Score (PDF)JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Kennesaw State (28-26, 10-10 A-Sun) scored the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth inning for a 2-1 victory at Harmon Stadium this afternoon. The North Florida (42-14, 16-4 A-Sun) loss snaps the nation's second longest win streak at 14 games.
The thrilling finish to the series was the third-straight game decided by one run this weekend. The Ospreys outscored the Owls, 8-7 in the series but were out-hit by Kennesaw State, 27-23. The two teams will be right back at it on Wednesday in the first round of the Atlantic Sun Conference tournament.
The eventual game-winning run came across in the top of the ninth when Chris Erwin slid in safely to home on a very close play. The Ospreys had the infield drawn in and the ground ball by Alex Liquori was fielded cleanly by
Patrick Ervin but throw was not in time for the bang-bang play at the plate. Erwin led off the inning with a double down the left field line and was sacrificed over to third base.
Kennesaw State starting pitcher Gabe Friese continued the string of excellent pitching from the Owls staff and went the distance for his first complete game of the season. He needed only 85 pitches to earn his fifth victory of the season. The right-hander struck out two batters and walked only one on the day.
Not to be outdueled, Osprey starting pitcher
Matt Vaka left with the game tied in the top of the seventh inning. He struck out a season-best, five batters and matched a season-high with 6.2 inning pitched. He did not factor in the decision but lowered his ERA to 1.55 on the season.
Senior
Ryan Roberson shined in his final game at Harmon Stadium and went 2-for-4 with the Ospreys lone RBI. With two outs in the bottom of the fourth he blooped a single down the right field line to tie the game at one.
The Ospreys will be the top seed in the upcoming Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament and will be pitted against the same Kennesaw State squad who enters as a six-seed. The two teams are scheduled to square off again in the first round on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. in Fort Myers, Fla. Every game of the tournament can be viewed on ESPN3.
