Box Score (PDF)JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Outfielder
Donnie Dewees hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the third inning to help North Florida (41-13, 15-5 A-Sun) to a 2-1 victory over Kennesaw State (27-25, 9-9 A-Sun) this evening at Harmon Stadium. The win sets a new D-1 era record for wins in a season and is the 13th consecutive win for the Ospreys.
Trailing 1-0 in the top of bottom of the third inning, Dewees came up with a runner on first and two outs and blasted his A-Sun leading 16
th home run of the season. The long ball proved to be the difference in the game as the Osprey pitching staff closed the door on the Owls for the remainder of the night.
Making his final start on the mound at Harmon Stadium, senior
Evan Incinelli tossed 7.2 innings of one-run baseball and struck five batters for his fifth win of the season. He scattered seven hits and has pitched seven or more innings in three of his last four starts. The win was his 13
th of his career, tied for the fourth most in school's D-1 era (2006-present).
Dewees prolonged the nation's longest active hit streak to 30 games and finished the night 3-for-4 with two RBIs. The smooth-swinging lefty racked up his 99
th hit of the season which leads the country. He already owns the program's single season record in hits (99), runs (80) and total bases (173) all of which are tops among NCAA Division I baseball players in 2015. He upped his season batting average to .444 which is good for second-highest in the nation.
Junior
Kyle Brooks continued his hot hitting and had two more base knocks in tonight's contest. He is 4-for-7 with two RBIs and a run scored in his last two games and is now batting .301 on the year.
One of the key plays of the game defensively for the Ospreys came in the top of the seventh inning when the Owls had the tying run on second with one out. A slow chopper to Incinelli was able to freeze Taylor Allum between second and third but he tried to advance on the throw over to first. First baseman
Ryan Roberson alertly fired a bullet across the diamond to cut down Allum at third base for the inning-ending double play.
The second North Florida double play of the night came in the ninth inning when
Corbin Olmstead induced a ground ball to third that was stabbed by
Trent Higginbothem for the 5-4-3 twin-killing. Olmstead recorded the four-pitch save for his ninth of the season. The Ospreys lead the Atlantic Sun with 54 double plays this year.
The win over defending Atlantic Sun Conference Champion, Kennesaw snaps a five-game losing streak to the Owls.
The second game of the three-game set will take place tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. at Harmon Stadium. The Ospreys we'll send sophomore right-hander
Bryan Baker (5-2) to the mound and he will be opposed by lefty Travis Bergen (6-3). Tomorrow will also be "Harmon Happy Hour" where fans 21 and over can enjoy $1 beer specials.
