Box Score (PDF)JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A quality start by North Florida (21-11, 2-2 A-Sun) right-hander
Evan Incinelli and a strong defensive effort behind him fueled a 7-2 win over Northern Kentucky (9-16, 0-1 A-Sun) this evening at Harmon Stadium.
Incinelli matched his longest outing of the year with six innings pitched and he did not allow an earned run for his third victory of the year. He struck out three and scattered six hits in his fourth start of 2015. The win is the senior's 11
th of his career.
Donnie Dewees, who came into the contest leading the nation in runs scored, added to that total after he went 2-for-4 with three runs scored. He hit his Atlantic Sun leading, ninth home run of the year and drove in two runs. He now has scored 44 runs this season and improved his league-best batting average to .409
Despite being charged with two errors, the Ospreys defense was superb in tonight's victory in the field, most notably second baseman
Patrick Ervin. After loading the bases in the top of the fifth with no outs, the Norse were only able to score one run on an RBI ground out by Trey Ganns. Ervin made a tremendous defensive play, ranging to his left for the innings first out. A batter later, Ervin robbed David Head of at least two RBIs when he dove to his right on a sharply hit ball up the middle and flipped the ball from his knees to
Kyle Brooks for the inning-ending fielder's choice.
In addition to stellar defensive plays by Ervin, left fielder
Garrick Ferguson kept the Norse off the scoreboard in the fourth when he gunned down Head trying to score from second on a single.
Trent Higginbothem added to the array of defensive spectacles with a diving play at third base to start a double play that ended the sixth inning.
The Ospreys came into the ball game ranked tops in the Atlantic Sun and third in the nation with a .982 fielding percentage.
North Florida never trailed in the contest and scored in the first inning for the third time in the last four games. Three consecutive doubles by Dewees, Higginbothem and
Ryan Roberson helped the Ospreys plate three runs in the first inning. All nine batters came to bat in the first inning for North Florida.
James Abbatinozzi drove in his 12
th run of the season with a bases-loaded single to right field in the bottom of the fifth. The catcher finished the night 2-for-4 and collected his sixth multiple-hit game in 13 starts. Ervin capped the two-run rally in the fifth with an RBI single through the left side.
Dewees blasted a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to put the Ospreys up, 7-2. It was his sixth long ball in the last 10 games for the redshirt sophomore.
Brooks needed just two assists in the game to become the program's Division I leader in career assists. He recorded number 439 in the seventh inning to surpass T.J. Thompson (2007-10). In the same inning Roberson recorded his 11
th putout of the game which vaulted him to the top of the school's D-1 career putout list and now has 936 for his career.
