Box Score (PDF)BOCA RATON, Fla. – For the second-straight day, No. 24 Florida Atlantic University (11-2), scored in its final turn at the plate in a 3-2 victory over North Florida (6-8). The Osprey pitching staff limited the Owls to just three hits in the contest.
After the Ospreys tied the game up in the top of the eighth inning, FAU responded on in the bottom half with the eventual game-winning run. Two of the Owls three hits came in the frame on back-to-back singles by Brett Lashley and Brendon Sanger. Lashley later scored on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Miller.
Sophomore
Donnie Dewees was a bright spot at the plate for North Florida with a 3-for-5 effort at the plate. He swiped two bases in the game and recorded his second double of the season.
Freshman
Matt Vaka made his third start of the season and did not allow a hit in three innings of work. He allowed an unearned and struck out one in the no-decision.
Conner Andrews and
Jamie Cardwell worked the next three innings surrendering just one hit and each striking out a batter.
The lock down pitching enabled the Ospreys to tie the game up in the sixth inning.
Trent Higginbothem got the Ospreys on the scoreboard with an RBI ground out. He was robbed of base hit after when by second baseman Stephen Kerr made an acrobatic play ranging to his right.

The pesky Owls regained the lead in the bottom of the seventh. After two walks, FAU successfully sacrificed the runners into scoring position. With two outs, a ground ball deep in the hole at short forced Ervin to throw to third base to get the runner crossing in front of them. The near base-running blunder was saved as Christian Dicks stopped and got himself stuck in a rundown allowing Ryan Miller to score.
Perhaps the best chance for the Ospreys to break the game open came in the top half of the eighth, trailing 2-1. After the first two runners reached base,
Ryan Roberson singled home Dewees for the tying run. The Ospreys eventually loaded the bases with one out but the Owls snagged two line drives out of the air to end the inning.
FAU was able to overcome three errors in the game and committed a total of eight in the two game series. Today marked the 11
th game this season decided by one or two runs for the Ospreys.
**Please note that the schedule for this weekend's series against Fairfield has been altered. Friday's contest has been POSTPONED and the two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
