Box Score (PDF)JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast University (14-13-1, 2-0 A-Sun) scored three runs in their final three turns at the plate to pull out a 7-4 victory over North Florida (19-11, 0-2 A-Sun) in the second game of a three game Atlantic Sun series at Harmon Stadium.
The Ospreys tied the game up at four in the bottom of the sixth inning on a two-RBI single by
Nick Karmeris. The Eagles however responded with the go-ahead run on a Colton Bottomley bases loaded single in the top of the seventh. The exclamation point however came in the top of the eighth when Matt Reardon hit a two-run home run into the jet stream blowing out to right field. The long ball was the freshman's first of his career.
Senior
Trent Higginbothem was 3-for-3 with three singles and an RBI. He now leads the Ospreys with 13 multiple hit games in 2015. Red-shirt sophomore
Donnie Dewees also put together a three-hit day and upped his team-leading batting average to .395.
Reigning Atlantic Sun Pitcher of the Week, Brady Anderson followed his complete game performance last Saturday with 91 pitches this afternoon. He pitched into the eighth inning and earned his third victory of the season. The right-hander struck out three and allowed only three earned runs in his fourth start of the year.
For the second-straight day, the Ospreys captured the lead in the first inning.
Kyle Brooks was hit by a pitch to start the game and a batter later, safely slid into third base on a
Keith Skinner single. The throw was there in plenty of time but bobbled by the third baseman. The error allowed the next batter,
Ryan Roberson to successfully execute his part of a sacrifice fly and give the Ospreys a 1-0 lead.
Florida Gulf Coast responded with three runs in the top of the second inning, highlighted by a Tyler Selesky two-RBI single through the right side. Selesky finished the day 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.
The Ospreys pulled within a run on the Higginbothem RBI in the bottom of the third but found themselves down two again in the top of the sixth. FGCU's Adam Eggnatz tripled to center field that allowed Zach Spivey to score from first and gave the Eagles a 4-2 lead.
The Ospreys were out-hit by the Eagles, 13-11. It marked only the fourth time this season the Ospreys were defeated when collecting 10 or more hits.
North Florida will look to avoid a sweep tomorrow afternoon with the series finale at Harmon Stadium scheduled for 1:00 p.m. A pair of freshmen are scheduled to pitch with
Matt Vaka taking the hill for the Ospreys and he will be opposed by lefty, Josh Dye.
