JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The North Florida softball team won their first game 5-4 but lost their second matchup with Toledo 5-1 Tuesday at the UNF Softball Complex.
The Ospreys (16-10) won game one on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh, but weren't able to get the bats working in game two of the day.
In the first game, Toledo jumped out to an early lead with a three-run second inning highlighted by back-to-back RBI doubles.
The Ospreys chipped away at the lead, first with a solo home run by junior
Lexi Taylor in the bottom of the second, then RBI sacrifice flies by freshman
Alex Arciola in the fourth and freshman
Ashley Niesman in the fifth.
Toledo took the lead back on a wild pitch in the top of the sixth, but the Ospreys battled back to tie in the bottom half of the sixth with a RBI single by junior
Shelby Duncan.
Niesman scored junior
Stacy McClelland on her second RBI sacrifice fly and third for the Ospreys in the game in the bottom of the seventh to win it.
Game two was a much different story, after scoring a run in the first inning on a RBI single, the Rockets scored four runs in the third inning. After walking in a run, The Ospreys made a crucial throwing error from catcher Arciola to first base with the bases loaded. The bases cleared and the Ospreys were down 5-0.
North Florida got their lone run in the bottom of the third, Duncan notched an RBI single to right center, scoring Taylor.
The Ospreys stay home for the weekend, taking on FGCU to open Atlantic Sun Conference play. They host a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m. and a single-game matchup at 1 p.m.
