Box Score (PDF)CHARLESTON, S.C. – In the second game of today's two-team doubleheader, Charleston Southern (5-3) broke a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the 13
th inning on an RBI single by Brandon Burris to defeat North Florida (6-6), 5-4 this evening at CSU Ballpark.
The game was the longest played by any Atlantic Sun team this season and the longest for the Ospreys since 2013. After the two teams combined for three runs in the sixth inning, both teams were held scoreless for the next six innings.
Sophomore
Alex Smith recorded his longest outing as an Osprey when he came on with one out in the bottom of the ninth. With a runner on, his catcher
Keith Skinner gunned down the speedy Burris trying to swipe second base. Smith induced a fly out to send the game into extras. He went on to toss 3.1 innings of hitless baseball. The hard-throwing righty struck out three batters and walked two in a total of 4.1 innings.
Smith was lifted with two outs in the bottom of the 13th for senior
Evan Incinelli. The right hander issued a walk to the first batter, Cole Murphy and gave up a hit to Jack Crittenberger. On the single, both runners were able to advance a base on an outfield error. With second and third and two outs, Burris punched a ball up the middle for the game-winner.
Junior
Donnie Dewees completed a five-hit day, putting forth a 3-for-6 effort at the plate in the nightcap. His third inning triple scored the Ospreys' first run. The three-bagger was his seventh of his career and third of the season.
After an
Alex Bacon sacrifice fly pulled the Ospreys within a run in the fifth inning, junior
Corbin Olmstead tied the game up in the sixth. His second double of the season split the gap in right center and scored
Keith Skinner all the way from first. He later scored on a ground out to give the Ospreys their only lead of the game at 4-3.
Charleston Southern tied the game right back up in the bottom half of the sixth. A sharp line drive in the hole between shortstop and third by Crittenberger enabled Murphy to tie the game at four.
Four of the five runs scored by the Buccaneers were unearned. North Florida starting pitcher,
Bryan Baker threw five innings, didn't allow an earned run and struck out five in the no decision. Appearing for the seventh time this season,
Matthew Naylor was the stop gap between Baker and Smith. Naylor allowed five hits, struck out one and pitched 3.1 innings.
