JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – After 27 runs combined in yesterday's contest, runs were hard to come by in the today's series finale as Virginia Military Institute (2-1) was able to hold on to a 2-1 victory at Harmon Stadium. North Florida (1-2) was held scoreless over eight innings until a ninth-inning comeback fell short.
Senior
Trent Higginbothem provided the offense for the Ospreys with one swing, when he led off the top of the ninth with his first home run of the spring. He lined a 3-2 pitch from reliever Micah Gorman over the left field wall to cut the VMI lead in half. It was one of three hits on the day for the third baseman. Gorman recovered from the blast, retiring the final three batters of the game to earn his first save.
The story for the Keydets was starting pitcher Brandon Barbery who was brilliant in his first collegiate start. The freshman tossed 82 pitches in six innings and struck out two batters. An Osprey offense that racked up 21 hits in yesterday's game was limited to just six today, five off of Barbery.
For the third-straight day, the Keydets scored in the top of the first inning. Catcher Matt Winn singled up the middle to score Jordan Tarsovich for the game's first run. Tarsovich reached on a single and got himself into scoring position after stealing second. Osprey starting pitcher
Evan Incinelli then worked out of a bases loaded jam, with three strikeouts to end the first-inning threat.
In what proved to the difference in the game, Ray Lopez singled to centerfield with two outs in the top of the fourth inning allowing Thomas Stallings to score from second. The RBI single gave the Keydets a 2-0 advantage. That would be all the offense that VMI needed to seal the final game of the series. Tarsovich and Winn finished the game with two hits a piece.
Incinelli put together a solid outing, pitching five innings and establishing a new career-high, seven strikeouts. After the first inning, the senior scattered four hits in the next four innings of work. Junior
Corbin Olmstead came on in relief and threw four scoreless innings. He also kept the Keydets guessing tying a career-high with six strikeouts.
The Ospreys will wrap up their season-opening four-game home stand on Tuesday when they welcome in The Citadel. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. at Harmon Stadium.
