UNF-Campbell Boxscore (PDF)UNF-South Carolina Boxscore (PDF) BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Hampton Inn & Suites of Holly Springs ended for University of North Florida volleyball with a pair of losses on Saturday. The Ospreys fell 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-23) to host Campbell in the day's first match and then dropped a 3-1 (20-25, 25-20, 25-17, 25-23) match to South Carolina.
"We struggled a little bit with our first contact the first match, but we were still a play or two away from winning some sets," said head coach Steve Loeswick. "I liked the way we bounced back the second match. We played with much more intensity and focus. We played very well at times this weekend, but we still have a bunch of things we can get better at."
Campbell 3, UNF 0Freshman
Courtney Miller hit .364 with 15 kills, but UNF was not able to overcome a close three-set match with host Campbell.
After being tied midway through the set, Campbell began to pull away from the Ospreys. Campbell went up by as many as six late. UNF cut into the Camels lead and fended off set point twice, including with a block from
Cameron McGuire and
Carinne Turner to make it 24-21. A Campbell block on the next play allowed the Camels to win the first set.
UNF battled back in the second set and used a
Tessa Alyman kill to even the match at 19-19. The Ospreys and Campbell traded points before the Camels used a block, an Osprey attack error and a Campbell kill to win the set.
Trailing by three, UNF used a four-point run to go up 18-17 on a Miller kill. However, Campbell came back to tie the set at 19-19. Both teams fought for control, but Campbell strung together three-straight points at the end to win the match.
Miller's 15 kills were a match-high, while Alyman added 10 kills. Turner tallied 19 assists and Whitmire added 21 digs.
Jessica Groen led Campbell with 12 kills. Summer Schuitema tallied a 30-assist, 13-dig double-double. Mary Crema made 15 digs.
UNF had 39 kills and hit .174.
Campbell tallied 41 kills and hit .202.
South Carolina 3, UNF 1UNF came out strong and captured the first set from the Gamecocks. Multiple runs allowed the Ospreys to surge to a six-point lead. A South Carolina attack error provided UNF with a 19-13 lead. Although South Carolina brought UNF's lead down to three, an Alyman kill was the first of three-straight points as UNF went up 22-16. The Ospreys ultimately captured the set with a Miller kill.
South Carolina went up by eight in the second set on a Taylr McNeil kill. UNF attempted to chip away at the Gamecocks' lead and eventually pulled to within four as the Ospreys fought off set point. Down 24-17, an Alyman kill was the first of three UNF points. However, South Carolina tied the match at 1-1 with a service error.
Although the Ospreys' hit .273 in the third set, they face a South Carolina team that hit .419. UNF tried to rebound from several late seven-point deficits, but McNeil had a set-winning kill that allowed South Carolina to take an eight-point win.
UNF battled back from being down by six to eventually tie the fourth set at 19-19. A kill from Miller sparked a four-point run that tied the set. However, South Carolina answered with its own four-point run to go up 23-19. A 4-1 run brought the Ospreys to within one, but that was as close as UNF could get as South Carolina won on an Osprey attack error.
Alyman recorded 15 kills and
Carina Hoff tallied 12 kills.
Carinne Turner put up 32 assists, while Miller had 15 digs.
KoKo Atoa-Williams led South Carolina with an 11-point, 13-dig double-double. McNeil added 16 kills. Allie Monserez recorded 43 assists and Mikael Christiaansen made 15 digs.
UNF had 46 kills and hit .140
South Carolina made 53 kills and hit .246.
UNF returns to action with its final early season tournament next weekend at UNF Arena. The Radisson Invitational takes place Friday and Saturday. The Ospreys host Nicholls State (10 a.m.) and Charlotte (7 p.m.) on Friday and Dayton (10 a.m.) and UNC Asheville (3 p.m.) on Saturday.
