@OspreyBSB Suffers Heartbreaking, Extra-Inning Loss to Jacksonville

Box Score (PDF)
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Jacksonville (21-32) completed an improbable comeback in the bottom of the 10th-inning with a walk-off RBI single from Connor Marabell. The 7-6 loss eliminated the Ospreys from the 2014 Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament.

A pair of walks earned by Alex Seifert and Michael Babb helped set the stage for Marabell and the fifth-seeded Dolphins. The Ospreys caught a break on an unsuccessful sacrifice bunt that led to the first out. Another walk put, Angelo Amendolare on second base and he scored easily on a rope down the right field line by Marabell to help the Dolphins advance.

Jacksonville scored five unanswered runs in four innings to tie the game up at six in the bottom of the ninth. The Dolphins led off the inning with a pair of infield hits and executed a successful sacrifice to move the tying run into scoring position. Catcher Braddock Rowe came through with a line drive to right center field to bring in both runs and send the game to extra innings.

Osprey starting pitcher, Nick Miller kept the Ospreys in the ball game but took a no-decision. He matched his season-best 6.2 innings pitched and struck out a pair.

Despite taking the loss in the contest, reliever Corbin Olmstead, came on in the bottom of the seventh and bailed the Ospreys out of a bases loaded jam. The sophomore entered the game with a 2-0 count on Seth DeWitt and threw three-straight strikes to get North Florida out of a potential game-changing jam. The Dolphins left 13 runners on base in the contest.

Marabell capped off a three-hit performance with his 10th-inning game-winner. He was 3-for-5 with an RBI to lead the Jacksonville offense. DeWitt and Amendolare each put together a pair of multiple-hit performances.

The Ospreys broke the game open in the top of the sixth, scoring four unearned runs. An error by Jacksonville second baseman, Seifert gave an opportunity for Alex Merritt and Alex Bacon to bat in the frame. Merritt delivered an RBI single through the right side to make the score 3-1. Bacon dug in and tagged his fifth home run of the season, extending the Osprey lead to 6-1.

The Dolphins, who looked to be down and out after a five-run deficit, responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth. Dyan Dillard smacked his third home run of the season with one out to make the score 6-2. Two more runs came across on a two-out single by Angelo Amdeolare, to pull the Dolphins within two.

Each team exchanged a run in the first inning. The Ospreys had the first two runners reach base and both were sacrificed over by Patrick Ervin. Junior Trent Higginbothem was able to plate the game's first run with a sacrifice fly. The RBI was his 50th of the season making him only the fourth Osprey to record 50 or more RBIs in a season in the Division I era. The Dolphins responded in the bottom half of the inning, tying game at one on an RBI ground out by Scott Schaub.

In the top of the third inning, Ervin found himself in the middle of another scoring opportunity. On a Drew Weeks double, Brooks was gunned down at the plate for the second out of the frame. Ervin picked up his teammate with a single through the right side, giving the Ospreys a 2-1 advantage.

Kyle Brooks had two more hits in today's game, finishing the series 4-for-10. Ervin and Merritt each had two hits for the Ospreys in the loss.

Ospreys pitching staff struggled with control for the majority of the afternoon. The North Florida pitching staff issued nine walks and hit three batters in the contest

The game was the fourth extra-inning game of this year's Atlantic Sun Tournament, setting a new tournament record.

It marked the second time that the Dolphins bested the Ospreys in the A-Sun tournament. Jacksonville eliminated the Ospreys from the 2010 Atlantic Sun Tournament and earned a spot in the championship game.

North Florida finishes the year with an overall record of 22-31.
