Box Score (PDF)JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – A nine-run, fifth inning for East Tennessee State University (18-17, 7-5 Atlantic Sun) led to a 10-4 victory over North Florida this afternoon. The Ospreys drop to 6-9 in Atlantic Sun play and fall to 15-21 overall.
ETSU broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth, plating nine runs. The Bucs scored four runs to start off the frame, which ended the day for starting pitcher
Corbin Olmstead. With the bases loaded, ETSU's Trey York brought everyone home on a bases-clearing double to left center. The Bucs added two more runs courtesy of a throwing error and a sacrifice fly by Gage Downey to make the score 10-1.
Starting pitcher Jamin McCann kept the North Florida offense in check all afternoon. The freshman left-hander tossed seven solid innings to earn his third victory of the season. He only recorded one strikeout but his defense was flawless behind him. He threw 77 pitches, 53 for strikes and did not walk a batter in the game.
For the second-straight day, the Ospreys were first to score but it proved to be their only led of the contest. In the top of the third,
Peyton Walsh led off the frame with a single. He moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt and was driven in on a
Drew Weeks' fourth double of the season. He now has 27 RBIs on the year, good for second on the team.
As they did all series, the Bucs responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game at one. A triple by the catcher Gage Downey led off the inning and he scored in the next at bat on a sacrifice fly. The Bucs stranded a runner in the frame after the second triple of the inning, this time by Clinton Freeman. ETSU came into the game ranked fifth in the country in triples.
Weeks was in the middle of another scoring inning for the Ospreys in the top of the eighth. He led smacked his second triple of the series and later scored on an RBI ground out by
Kyle Brooks. It was the second triple of the series and eighth of his career which ranks him second in the Division I era. He had three hits in the game for the second-straight day and is now batting an Atlantic Sun best, .432.
Walsh went 2-for-4 with a run scored in the contest.
Alex Merritt and
Alex Bacon also put together multiple-hit efforts. For the second-straight game, the Ospreys out-hit the Bucs and ended up with 31 hits in the series compared to 29 by ETSU.
Coming into the weekend North Florida won four of the last five meetings and only one game separated the two teams in the all-time series. The Ospreys were swept for the first time since 2012 when Kennesaw State took all three at Fred Stillwell Stadium.
The Ospreys return home on Tuesday for the rubber game of a three-game season series with Bethune Cookman. The Wildcats evened the series up with an 8-1 victory in Daytona Beach back on March 18
th. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at Dusty Rhodes Field at Harmon Stadium. The game will be broadcasted live on ASun.TV and 1010XL in Jacksonville.
