STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern (15-2), the top hitting team in the country, compiled 12 hits and three home runs in a 13-1 win over North Florida (6-8) this evening. The Eagles scored four runs in their first at bat and five in their final turn en route to their eighth-straight victory.

The loss puts a damper on the late string of success against the Eagles in recent years. Coming into the game, North Florida had won seven of the previous eight meetings including a season sweep in 2013.

Junior Garrick Ferguson put together his second multiple-hit game of the season, going 2-for-4 with a run scored. Kyle Brooks, Drew Weeks and Ryan Roberson combined for three of the Ospreys seven hits on the night.

The high-flying Eagle offense set the tone early, posting four runs in the bottom of the first inning. A two-RBI single by Aaron Palmer capped the Georgia Southern scoring in the first frame. The Eagles did more damage in the third and sixth innings by virtue of the home run. Georgia Southern came into the game leading the nation with 23 home runs through 16 games.

In the third, Garrett Chapman cleared the fence in left center field for a two-run home run to give the Eagles a 6-0 advantage. The homer was the designated hitter's sixth of the season. Two innings later Aaron Mizell cracked the first of his two long balls, driving a two-run home run to straightaway center, extending the Georgia Southern lead to 8-0.

Mizell went deep again in the bottom of the eighth with a two-run homer to right center, completing a five run inning for the home team. The right-handed hitting outfielder now has eight home runs on the season.

The Ospreys finally broke through in the top of the seventh after loading the bases with one out. Sophomore Ty Kelly drove a pitch into right field that was nearly run down by Mizzell. Only one run was able to score, with the runners holding to see if the play was made near the wall. Eagle reliever Matt McCall was able to retire the last two batters to end the UNF rally.

The Eagles used a total of five pitchers to limit the UNF scoring on the night. Eric Alonzo was credited with the win, tossing four innings of shutout baseball. He struck out three and scattered three hits in the victory.

Pitching the sixth and seventh innings for the Ospreys, sophomore Corbin Olmstead faced the minimum over two innings and struck out one in his fourth appearance of the year.

The Ospreys will return home for the first time since February 22nd to take on Bethune-Cookman tomorrow evening at Harmon Stadium. Junior right-hander Nick Miller (0-0) is the slated starter for the Ospreys and he will be opposed by John Sever (1-1). First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
