Long Ball Dooms Ospreys Against Ranked Tar Heels

Box Score (PDF)
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – For the second-straight game, a North Carolina home run was the difference in a 5-1 victory over North Florida this afternoon at Boshamer Stadium. Catcher Korey Dunbar hit a go-ahead grand slam in the bottom of the fifth for his second homer of the series.

The loss dips the UNF record to 4-5 while UNC improves to 6-3. Dunbar went 2-for-4 on the afternoon with a run scored and four RBIs.

The Tar Heels got another quality pitching effort today, this time out of junior Benton Moss. The right-hander went the distance, allowing only one run over nine innings of work while striking out four. It was the first complete game of Moss' career as he picked up his first win in 2014. After giving up a first inning run, Moss went through a stretch where he retired 10-consecutive batters before allowing a runner in the fifth.

After failing to get on the scoreboard yesterday, the Ospreys wasted little time plating their first run of today's ballgame. Patrick Ervin led the game off with a single to right field and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. With two outs, the sizzling Drew Weeks lined a single to right to put the Ospreys up 1-0. The junior, who came into the game as the Atlantic Sun leader in hitting (.515) and extended his hitting streak to 17 games.

UNF starter, Evan Incinelli held the Tar Heels scoreless through five innings but ran into trouble in the sixth. After the first two batters reached base, Incinelli was able to nullify a sacrifice bunt attempt by making a nice play to catch the runner trying to advance to third. After retiring the next batter, Tar Heel first baseman, Joe Dudek, walked to load the bases. That brought up Dunbar, yesterday's primary run producer, who worked the count to 3-2 and belted a grand slam over the left field wall to put the Tar Heels up 4-1.

The Tar Heels produced the game's final run in their next turn at the plate. After a lead-off single by pinch-hitter Michael Massardo, UNC executed a perfectly placed hit and run to put runners on the corners. A long fly ball to left field, was deep enough to score Massardo for the game's final run.

Weeks finished the day, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. He is 10-for-16 in his last four games and upped his season batting average to a league-leading .528.

The two teams will conclude the non-conference series tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Boshamer Stadium.
