Game BookTALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- A combined 43 points from North Florida sophomores
Dallas Moore and
Chris Davenport wasn't enough to overcome a pair of scoring spurts by Florida State in 93-77 loss Wednesday night at the Tucker Center.
Moore finished with a team high 23 points, marking his third straight 20-point effort, and Davenport chipped in a season best 20 along with five rebounds and four assists. The loss was the second in a row for UNF (6-5) following a five-game win streak for the Ospreys. FSU improved to 5-5 on the year with the win.
The Ospreys and Seminoles battled back-and-forth for much of the opening half. UNF trimmed an eight-point deficit to one point, 26-25, with 5:29 left in the first period, before FSU closed the stanza with a 17-4 run and a 43-29 halftime lead.
"This was a frustrating game tonight," said head coach
Matthew Driscoll. "For most of the first half we were doing the things we wanted to do on both ends of the floor. Unfortunately, we got away from those things in the closing minutes of the first half and that allowed them to gain the momentum. Our guys again continued to battle and refused to quit but if we want to be more than a good team than we've got to figure out how to get stops consistently and play the way we want to play."
UNF raced out of the halftime break, scoring the first six points to clip the Seminole lead to just 8 at 43-35, but FSU again responded with another spurt outscoring the Ospreys 17-5 over the next four minutes of play. The run pushed the margin to 20 with FSU leading 60-40 with 14 minutes remaining.
The two squads would trade baskets for much of the remainder of the game as the Seminoles would lead by as much as 24 before seeing the Ospreys pull within 14 on a couple occassions.
For the game, FSU shot 58 percent from the floor and outrebounded UNF, 38-27. In addition, the Seminoles tallied 25 assists on 34 baskets. The Ospreys finished the contest shooting 42 percent from the floor but connected on just 5 of 24 (20 percent) from the three-point line. UNF did force 15 turnovers and made 24 of 33 (73 percent) free throws led by a 10-13 performance by Davenport.
Montay Brandon led the FSU attack finishing with 24 points and eight assists. Phil Cofer added 14 points and eight rebounds while Kiel Turpin scored 19. Xavier Rathan-Mayes nearly had a double-double tallying 11 points and nine rebounds.
For UNF,
Beau Beech also reached double figures scoring 13 points.
North Florida continues its busy week of competition with a game Friday at Florida A&M. The game will be the third in five days for UNF.
