JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Perhaps the loudest game all season will take place for University of North Florida women's basketball on Tuesday morning as the Ospreys take on Edward Waters on Elementary School Day held at UNF Arena. Over 2,500 students from schools in Duval and St. Johns counties are expected to attend.
"The Elementary School Day game is one of my favorite games every year," said head coach
Mary Tappmeyer. "We get to play in front of over 2,500 school kids and the energy level of the crowd is through the roof! Our team gets to play in front of a packed house with you Osprey fans. We love the environment and energy associated with the game."
It is the fourth time UNF has hosted an Elementary School Day game and the second consecutive year in which the Ospreys have faced Edward Waters in the event. Over 7,200 students have attended the first three Elementary School Days.
For fans not affiliated with Elementary School Day, tickets will still be available. Single-game tickets are $6 Adult and $4 Youth 17-and-under, Senior Citizens 55+, UNF Faculty/Staff and Military. Students with a valid Osprey 1 Card and children 2-and-under are free. Tickets can be purchased online at
www.UNFOspreys.com, by phone at (904) 620-BIRD (2473) or at the UNF Arena Ticket Office.
Not Just Any Field Trip: With Elementary School Day, UNF makes the connection between math and basketball. Each student receives a math workbook filled with grade-appropriate problems related to basketball.
UNF and Elementary School Day: The Ospreys are 2-1 on their own Elementary School Day. The Ospreys have defeated Bethune-Cookman (2012) and Edward Waters (2013). However, UNF fell to Savannah State in overtime in 2011, the first season the Ospreys held Elementary School Day.
A Little History Lesson: The first women's basketball game in UNF's history was against Edward Waters. The Ospreys defeated the Tigers 70-57 on Nov. 30, 1992. Assistant coach
Nancy Miller, who was a freshman on the 1992-93 team, recorded eight points and eight rebounds for the Ospreys in that game.
From the Bench: Both
Paulina Zaveckaite and
Bailey Florin came off the bench to lead the Ospreys' offense and defense on Saturday against Georgia State. Zaveckaite posted an 11-point, 17-rebound double-double, while Florin scored a career-high 16 points.
Scouting Edward Waters: Enters Tuesday with a 5-2 record… has scored over 65 points in all five wins, but only 43 and 46 points in its two losses… four players average over 10.0 points per game with Thomia Wadley having a team-best 16.7 average… Brittany Rowell is averaging a double-double (15.2 points, 10.3 rebounds).
UNF-Edward Waters Series: UNF leads the all-time series 10-0 and won last year's game 76-55.
