Boxscore (PDF) JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A tough night on the court hurt University of North Florida volleyball in a 3-0 (25-13, 25-14, 25-18) loss to Florida Gulf Coast during Senior Night on Friday at UNF Arena. However, despite the loss, the Ospreys still clinched a berth to next weekend's Atlantic Sun Tournament as Kennesaw State was swept earlier on Friday by Northern Kentucky.
"Florida Gulf Coast is a very strong team and they played very well tonight," said head coach Steve Loeswick. "We'll have to get past this match and make sure we are ready for tomorrow's match against Stetson. There are definitely some areas we can improve upon, but I'm confident our team will come ready to play tomorrow."
UNF had a difficult time finding its rhythm in the first two sets and had to contend with a consistent hitting Florida Gulf Coast team. The Eagles hit .481 in the first set and then .312 in the second set. Florida Gulf Coast used multiple runs in the first set to pull away and push its lead to 10 on an Eleonora Kazarian kill at 20-10. Although UNF attempted to chip away at the deficit, Florida Gulf Coast sealed the first-set victory with a block from Lauren Tutwiler and Kazarian.
UNF faced an quick nine-point deficit in the second set at Florida Gulf Coast used a six-point run to take a 14-5 lead. The Ospreys trimmed the Eagles' lead down to six with a
Madison Hatcher kill to make it 14-8. However, the six points was as close as UNF could get as Florida Gulf Coast strung together multiple points on four of its next five service rotations.
The Ospreys attempted to fight back in the third set and went up 15-12 on a
Morgan Van Alstine kill. Florida Gulf Coast answered with a three-point run to tie the set at 15-15. UNF went on to break three ties, including at 18-17 with a
Cameron McGuire kill. However, the Eagles finished the match on an eight-point run.
Van Alstine led the Ospreys with a .583 hitting percentage, making seven kills on 12 attack with no errors.
Abby Fesl tallied 17 assists, while
Cari Whitmire made 10 digs.
UNF hit .033 and had 23 kills and 31 digs.
Jessica Barnes and Kazarian led the Eagles with 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Gigi Meyer recorded 32 assists and Whitney Masters had 15 digs.
Florida Gulf Coast hit .308 for the match, making 40 kills, 44 digs and 10.0 blocks.
UNF finishes the regular season on Saturday against Stetson. Match time is set for 3 p.m., at UNF Arena.
