Boxscore (PDF) DeLAND, Fla. – Despite setting a new program record for total team blocks in a four-set match, University of North Florida volleyball dropped a 3-1 (25-20, 23-25, 32-30, 25-22) decision at Stetson on Saturday afternoon at the Edmunds Center. The Ospreys made 18.0 team blocks with
Morgan Van Alstine having a match-best 10 blocks.
Tessa Alyman and
Cameron McGuire each tallied seven blocks.
The Ospreys' 18.0 total team blocks was one block higher than the previous record of 17.0 that was accomplished three times in a four-set match. The previous three occurrences were against Flagler (Oct. 25, 2005), Barry (Sept. 12, 1998) and Mesa State (Sept. 6, 1998). Additionally, the 18.0 total team blocks is the most in a match for the Ospreys since rallying scoring was established in 2001.
Van Alstine's 10 blocks, all of which were block assists, set a new career high for her. She also became the fourth player in program history to have 10.0 total blocks for a four-set match.
"We did a better job toady of being efficient offensively, unfortunately our passing struggled a bit which ended up giving Stetson some crucial points near the end of sets," said head coach Steve Loeswick. "We battled all match, but came up short."
In the first set, UNF fought back and tied the match at 18-18 on a Hatter attack error. However, a late three-point response by Stetson was costly as the Hatters went up 21-18. UNF could not overcome the deficit and the Hatters took the set on an Osprey attack error.
UNF led from start to finish in the second set and quickly distanced itself from the Hatters. Up by one, a seven-point run capped by an Alyman-Van Alstine block put the Ospreys up 16-8. Stetson chipped away at UNF's lead and fended off set-point four times before an attack error provided the Ospreys with their final point.
Both teams battled for control of the third set that went into extra points. Stetson had a set-point advantage after a Jessica Armstrong kill made it 24-20. UNF fought off set point, using a five-point spurt to go up 25-24 on another Alyman-Van Alstine block. Five ties occurred as the two teams attempted to gain an advantage. However, Stetson strung together two points with an Armstrong kill and an Osprey attack miscue to win the set.
UNF went up 17-11 in the fourth set behind a six-point run that was started by a
Courtney Miller kill. Stetson took advantage of an Osprey attack error and answered with an eight-point run to erase UNF's lead and go up 19-17. UNF came to within one several times, but Madson Akins recorded the match-winning kill for the Hatters.
Abby Fesl recorded her second-straight double-double with 39 assists and 11 digs, while
Cari Whitmire posted 25 digs. Miller paced UNF with 15 kills, while Alyman and
Carina Hoff added 11 and 10 kills, respectively.
UNF hit .229 for the match and recorded 52 kills and 72 digs.
Akins had a 19-kill, 10-dig double-double for Stetson, while Kayla Weller added a 58-assist, 17-dig double-double. Armstrong and McKenna Foster added 16 and 12 kills, respectively. Alexa Drost recorded 20 digs.
Stetson hit .191 with 69 kills, 76 digs and 11 aces.
UNF returns to action next weekend with two more Atlantic Sun road matches. The Ospreys travel to Northern Kentucky for a 6:30 p.m., match on Friday and then to Lipscomb for a 3 p.m., EST match on Saturday.
