JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida baseball team's
Evan Incinelli threw a career best 7.2 innings en route to a 3-1 victory over Bethune-Cookman on Tuesday night at Dusty Rhodes Field at Harmon Stadium. The Ospreys improved to 21-10 on the season, while the Wildcats fell to 14-17.
Incinelli allowed just one unearned run in a career-high 7.2 innings of work en route to his third victory of the season. The sophomore scattered three base hits – all singles – allowing a walk. The Orlando native also tied a career-high with two strikeouts. It was the third time on the season for Incinelli with two strikeouts. Incinelli posted three consecutive 1-2-3 inning and retired 12 consecutive batters before giving way to
Corbin Olmstead.
Olmstead worked a perfect 1.1 innings to earn his team-best third save of the season. The freshman did not allow a hit or a walk, while striking out one. Incinelli and Olmstead combined to retire the final 16 consecutive batters in order.
Offensively, the Ospreys scored three runs on seven hits and a pair of Wildcat errors.
Paul Karmeris led the team with a pair of hits, while
Drew Weeks hit a home run, scoring a run and driving in a pair of runs.
Tyler Marincov added a double in the game.
Ryan Roberson and
Garrick Ferguson each scored a run apiece in the game.
Bethune-Cookman was the first team to score, scratching a run in the top of the first inning. Leadoff batter Josh Johnson started the game by reaching second base on a throwing error by the Ospreys. With one out, Johnson stole third base. He came around to score on a RBI groundout, giving the Wildcats a 1-0 advantage.
North Florida tied the score in the bottom of the first inning on one swing. Weeks led off the inning with a solo home run to left center field. The home run was the sophomore's team-leading fifth home run of the season and gave Weeks six career homers.
The Ospreys took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Roberson led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a groundout. With two outs,
Spencer Herrmann walked to continue the inning.
Corey Bass was hit by a pitch to load the bases. After a pitching change, Weeks drew a four-pitch walk to score Roberson from third and give UNF a 2-1 advantage.
The game remained 2-1 until the bottom of the eighth inning. Roberson reached base on a throwing error by the Wildcats. Ferguson entered the game to run for Roberson, advancing to second base on an Olmstead single up the middle.
Kyle Brooks attempted to move the runners with a sacrifice bunt, however, on the play, Bethune-Cookman attempted to try to erase the lead runner. The throw to third base was off the mark, allowing Ferguson to score and giving the Ospreys a 3-1 lead they would not relinquish.
