JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida baseball team dropped a 4-0 decision to Kennesaw State on Friday night at Dusty Rhodes Field at Harmon Stadium. The Ospreys (27-12, 9-4 Atlantic Sun) fell behind early and were unable to recover as the Owls' (21-19, 9-7 A-Sun) Stephen Janas kept the UNF bats at bay.
The loss snapped a six-game winning streak by the Ospreys and a five-game winning streak in the A-Sun. The Owls have now won seven straight games against the Ospreys.
Offensively, North Florida managed only five hits in the game.
Paul Karmeris led the Ospreys with a pair of base hits. The senior also drew a walk to reach base a team-best three times in the game.
Tyler Marincov,
Ryan Roberson and
Corey Bass each added hits in the game.
On the mound,
Tommy Organ fell to 5-2 overall on the season. The senior allowed four runs on nine hits in 5.0 innings of work. Organ issued a pair of walks with three strikeouts. North Florida reliever
David Trexler worked the final 4.0 innings. The junior surrendered just two hits with no runs allowed and no walks. Trexler struck out a career-high six batters on the night.
For Kennesaw State, Janas (6-0) allowed no runs on just five hits in a complete game effort. The pitcher surrendered one walk and struck out four batters.
The Owls threatened in the first inning. KSU used a leadoff single and a sacrifice but to move a runner into scoring position. Organ and the Ospreys were able to escape the first inning without allowing a run with a strikeout and a line drive out to right field.
Kennesaw State was the first team to scratch the scoreboard, plating a pair of runs in the top of the third inning. For the second time in three innings, the Owls led off an inning with a single. KSU moved the runner into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. The Osprey defense kept the Owls off the scoreboard as the next batter singled to right field and Marincov was able to throw out the lead runner at the plate. KSU's Bo Way put the visitors on the scoreboard with a triple to right field just out of reach of a diving Marincov. The inning continued with a walk and the second run of the inning scored on an infield single. North Florida's defense once again came through to keep the game close as
Drew Weeks threw out the lead runner at home trying to score on a shallow single to left field to end the inning.
KSU added a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning. With one out, the Owls used back-to-back doubles to score a run and leave a runner in scoring position. The runner advanced to third on a groundout and came around to score on a wild pitch, making the score 4-0 in favor of Kennesaw State.
In the Ospreys half of the fifth inning, Roberson broke up Janas' no-hit bid with a single to left center field. North Florida was unable to trim the deficit however and headed to the final three innings down by four.
The Owls threatened in the top of the sixth inning. After a leadoff walk, the Ospreys went to the bullpen and brought in Trexler. The runner moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt, but Trexler ended the threat with back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning.
North Florida threatened in the bottom of the seventh inning. P. Karmeris led off the inning with an infield single to the shortstop. Marincov followed with a single to right field. P. Karmeris advanced to third base on a deep fly ball to right field, but the Ospreys would advance no further as a pop up and a fly ball ended the inning.
The Ospreys worked out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the eighth inning. After surrendering a leadoff single, the Owls attempted to bunt to advance the runner into scoring position. The bunt attempt fell just out of reach of a diving Trexler for an infield single. The next batter attempted to lay down a sacrifice bunt. The Ospreys fielded the bunt and elected to try to retire the lead runner, but the runner was ruled safe, loading the bases. With the bases loaded and no outs, Trexler struck out the next two batters and induced an inning-ending fly ball to escape the inning without allowing a run.
After a 1-2-3 inning by Trexler, the Ospreys entered the bottom of the ninth down 4-0. P. Karmeris led off the inning with a single through the left side of the infield. The Owls induced a double play to lead the bases empty with two outs and used a game-ending strikeout to secure the victory.
