North Florida Pounds South Alabama, 15-2, to Even Series

MOBILE, Ala. – The University of North Florida baseball team's Kyle Westwood posted his best performance of the season on the mound as the Ospreys recorded a 15-2 victory on the road against South Alabama at Eddie Stanky Field in Mobile, Ala. In a game that saw the Ospreys score 15 runs on 14 hits, Westwood recorded eight strikeouts to move into first place in North Florida's Division I records for career strikeouts with 164.
 
On the day, Westwood scattered six hits in 7.0 innings of work. He allowed one run on the day. The senior hurler notched a season-best eight strikeouts with no walks. Westwood recorded four for 1-2-3 innings on the day. The senior entered the game with 156 career strikeouts, three strikeouts shy of the North Florida Division I career leader Brad Johnson (2006-07). Westwood tied the mark with his third strikeout of the game – the second out of the third inning. In the fifth inning, the Tarpon Springs native ended the inning with his record-breaking strikeout. The senior added four more strikeouts throughout the course of the game.
 
Ryan McMahon and Jamie Cardwell combined to pitch the final two innings surrendering one unearned run.
 
Offensively, the Osprey scored 15 runs on 14 hits, including five players with multiple hits in the game. Tyler Marincov finished the game with two hits, including a home run. He led the team with a season-best five RBI, while adding three runs scored. Ryan Roberson finished the game with a team-best three hits, including a double. Joe Wielbruda, Donnie Dewees and Nick Karmeris each added two hits apiece, while Wielbruda scored three runs. Dewees, Roberson and Wielbruda each had doubles in the game.
 
The Ospreys led 3-1 late in the game, but broke the game open with six runs in the seventh inning and five runs in the eighth. North Florida added an insurance run in the top of the ninth inning. The Ospreys batted around in both the seventh and the eighth to break open the game.
 
North Florida took the lead in the top of the third inning. N. Karmeris led off the inning with a single up the middle – the first hit of the game for the Ospreys. With one out, Wielbruda singled to give UNF a pair of base runners. Drew Weeks followed with a single to the shortstop to load the bases. Marincov plated the first run of the game for North Florida with a sacrifice fly to right field. The Ospreys benefited from a wild pitch to take a 2-0 lead. Roberson increased the North Florida lead to three runs with an RBI single to center field. The three runs would be all the run support that the Ospreys would need as Westwood kept the South Alabama offense at bay.
 
South Alabama cut the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring a run on a pair of hits, but were unable to get any closer as the UNF pitching staff held strong.
 
The Ospreys broke the game open in the top of the seventh inning. In the inning, North Florida sent a season-high 11 batters to the plate, scoring six runs on five hits and a pair of errors by South Alabama. The inning was highlighted by Marincov's third home run of the season – a two-run shot to left field.
 
North Florida added five more runs in the top of the eighth inning, batting around for the second consecutive inning. The Ospreys scored five runs on four hits and three walks. Marincov notched a two-RBI double in the inning, while Dewees recorded an RBI double.
 
The Ospreys added a run in the top of the ninth inning. North Florida used an error to place a runner on base. Roberson followed with a double that was mishandled by the Jaguars, allowing the lead runner to score. UNF surrendered an unearned run in the bottom of the inning, but came away with a 15-2 victory.
 
North Florida and South Alabama conclude the three-game series with a single game on Sunday afternoon. First pitch of the rubber match at Stanky Field is slated for 1:00 p.m. (CT) / 2:00 p.m. (ET).
