JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Donnie Dewees set the University of North Florida school record for triples in a game as the Ospreys rolled past East Tennessee State, 15-4, in the opener of a three-game Atlantic Sun Conference series on Thursday evening at Dusty Rhodes Field at Harmon Stadium.
Dewees set the North Florida school record for triples in a game by an individual with three. The three triples broke the school record of two set by B.J. Guzzone in 1988, Chris Adams in 1991 and most recently by
Kyle Brooks this season against Lafayette.
In addition to breaking the individual record, Dewees tied the Ospreys' team record for triples in a game. As a team, the Ospreys have posted three games prior to Dewees' performance with three triples – vs. Nova in 1988, vs. Fairmont on March 6, 1997 and vs. Jacksonville on May 18, 2012.
Dewees finished the night 4-for-6 with four runs scored and seven RBI. Dewees recorded four extra base hits and 11 total bases on the night. His seven runs batted in fell just one RBI shy of the Ospreys' school record.
On a night that featured a trio of three-baggers,
Ryan Roberson finished a triple shy of hitting for the cycle. The junior concluded the night 4-for-4 with a home run, two doubles and a single. He scored two runs while driving in five.
Paul Karmeris,
Tyler Marincov,
Corbin Olmstead and
Joe Wielbruda each had multiple hits in a game that saw the Ospreys recording a season-best 20 hits. The Ospreys notched eight extra base hits on the night.
Peyton Walsh added a double to go along with Dewees and Roberson's extra base hits.
UNF's offense overshadowed a stellar pitching performance by starter
Tommy Organ. The southpaw tossed 6.2 innings en route to his fourth victory of the season. Organ scattered seven hits, surrendering three earned runs. He allowed just one walk while striking out five batters. Organ used a double play and a caught stealing to help post three 1-2-3 innings.
Evan Incinelli and
Trey Ferrano combined to toss the final 2.1 innings. Incinelli allowed a run on three hits, while Ferrano posted a perfect 1-2-3 inning with a strikeout.
Neither team was able to score in the early until North Florida opened up the scoring with four runs in the bottom of the third inning. The Ospreys scored four runs on six hits highlighted by a two-RBI triple by Dewees and a RBI double by Roberson. UNF sent nine batters to the plate in the bottom of the third – the 12th time the Ospreys have batted around this season.
The Ospreys also scored four runs in the fourth and fifth innings, taking a commanding 12-0 lead. North Florida scored eight total runs on nine base hits; including a bases-loaded triple and a RBI double by Dewees.
The Buccaneers were able to scratch out three runs on four hits in the top of the sixth inning to trim the lead to 12-3. The inning featured six pinch hitters as ETSU emptied its bench.
North Florida responded with three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Roberson's two-run home run highlighted the inning. For Roberson, the home run was his second of the season and the eighth of his career.
ETSU scored the final run of the game in the top of the eighth inning. After a leadoff single, the Bucs used a pair of two-out singles to plate the run. ETSU would get no closer and North Florida cruised to a 15-4 victory to open the three-game A-Sun series.
