Bisons Edge Ospreys in Extras

Boxscore

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The University of North Florida baseball team dropped a 4-3 decision to Lipscomb in the final game of a three-game Atlantic Sun Conference series at Ken Dugan Field in Nashville, Tenn. The Ospreys rallied to take the lead in the eighth inning, but fell to the Bisons in 10 innings. UNF won the series 2-1; its first A-Sun opening series victory since 2010.

In the bottom of the 10th inning tied 3-3, Lipscomb led off the inning with a single and advanced the runner to second with a sacrifice bunt. The next batter singled through the left side of the infield. Drew Weeks picked up the ball and threw home. The runner slid under the tag by Corey Bass, giving the Bisons a walk-off victory.

Offensively, the Ospreys scored three runs on nine hits. Kyle Brooks, Paul Karmeris and Weeks each had a pair of hits in the game with Brooks doubling and driving in a team-best two runs. Corbin Olmstead was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the top of the eighth inning with the Ospreys down 1-0 for the game-tying RBI. P. Karmeris, Tyler Marincov and Weeks each scored a run in the game.

The game was a pitchers duel for most of the game. As a team, the Ospreys allowed four runs with just three earned runs. Four batters combined for five strikeouts and three walks. Lipscomb recorded 10 hits in the game with just a pair of extra base hits.

Starting pitcher Michael Renner tossed 6.2 innings. The senior did not allow a hit for the first 5.1 innings of play. Renner was charged with a run on four total hits – all singles. The southpaw walked three, while striking out a team-best four batters.

David Trexler, Spencer Herrmann and Nick Allbritton combined to pitch the final 2.2 innings of work. Trexler entered the game in the seventh in relief of Renner; striking out the first batter he faced to end the inning. He allowed a base hit before giving way to Herrmann, being charged with a run. Herrmann allowed an unearned run on a pair of hits before Allbritton entered the game. Allbritton worked 2.1 innings, scattering three singles. He took the hard-luck loss being charged with the final run of the game.

North Florida threatened in the top of the second inning. With one out, P. Karmeris singled to third base and advanced to second on a throwing error by Lipscomb. P. Karmeris moved to within 90 feet of home on a groundout, but he was left stranded as a groundout ended the inning.

The Ospreys missed an opportunity in the top of the second inning. With two outs, Donnie Dewees singled up the middle to start things off for the visitors. P. Karmeris followed with another infield single to give North Florida a pair of base runners. The Ospreys were unable to score as a strikeout ended the inning, leaving the game scoreless.

The two teams were made to exit the field as lightning was spotted in the area. In addition, a steady rainfall and heavy winds continued during the delay. The weather delay lasted one hour and 38 minutes.

Lipscomb was the first team to score, plating a run in the bottom of the sixth inning. With one out, the Bison broke up Renner's no-hit bid with a single up the middle. A second one-out single gave the home team a pair of base runners. A third single of the inning loaded the bases with just one out. The Bisons used a sacrifice fly to center field to score the first run of the game. Renner induced a fly ball out to end the inning and limit Lipscomb to just one run.

North Florida took the lead in the top of the eighth inning. Weeks led off the inning with a single to right field and moved into scoring position with a stolen base. Marincov singled to shortstop to give UNF a pair of base runners. Weeks advanced to third base on a deep fly ball. After a pitching change, Marincov stole second base to give the Ospreys a pair of runners in scoring position. With two outs, P. Karmeris drew a walk to load the bases. Olmstead was hit by a pitch, tying the game at 1-1. After a pitching change, Brooks singled to left field, scoring Marincov and P. Karmeris to give the Ospreys a 3-1 lead.

The Bisons responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Lipscomb led off the inning with a double and the next batter was hit by a pitch to give the home team a pair of base runners. The Bisons used a bunt single to load the bases. Lipscomb scored the first run of the inning on what appeared to be a foul ball. The home plate umpire ruled a catcher's interference, which allowed the batter to reach first base and each runner to advance. With the bases load, Lipscomb used an RBI single to score the tying run. The Ospreys went to the bullpen, bringing in Allbritton. The senior got the first batter he faced to fly out to shallow center field, preventing any runners from advancing. Allbritton induced an inning-ending double play to send the game into the ninth tied 3-3.

Neither team was able to score a run in the ninth inning. Both teams recorded base hits, but excellent defense erased the runners. After surrendering a base hit, Allbritton induced the second double play in as many innings to leave the bases empty in the ninth. A fly ball forced extra innings.

The Ospreys threatened in the top of the 10th inning, but were unable to score the go-ahead run. With one out, Dewees walked to give North Florida a base runner. He moved to second on a balk by the Lipscomb pitcher. The next two batters in the Osprey lineup were retired in order, setting up the pivotal bottom of the 10th.
