Ospreys Walk Past Tigers in Lopsided Victory

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida baseball team scored 18 runs on 11 hits and a school-record 16 walks to defeat Savannah State, 18-4, on Tuesday night at Harmon Stadium. The game was tied 1-1 until the Ospreys broke the game open with two hits and seven walks in an eight-run fourth inning.
 
Offensively, the Ospreys put together 11 hits on the night, including four extra base hits. Paul Karmeris, Corbin Olmstead and Garrick Ferguson each had two hits apiece. Ryan Roberson, Peyton Walsh and Ferguson each had doubles on the night, while Olmstead notched his first collegiate triple. Ten different Ospreys players drew at least one walk with four different players walking multiple times.
 
The 16 walks issued by the Savannah State pitching staff is a new North Florida record. The previous record was 14 walks three total times against Palm Beach Atlantic (1989), Florida Memorial (1990) and St. Leo (2001).
 
On the mound, North Florida used four pitchers on the night. Starting pitcher Tommy Organ surrendered a run on two hits with a walk and two strikeouts in 3.0 innings of work. He gave way to David Trexler who earned his second victory of the season. Trexler tossed 2.0 scoreless innings allowing a pair of walks and striking out two. Spencer Herrmann pitched the next 2.0 innings allowing one run on a hit and two walks. Herrmann led the Osprey pitchers with five strikeouts. Marshal Rosenberger tossed the final 2.0 innings of the game. The senior allowed two runs on one hit with two walks and a pair of strikeouts.
 
Savannah State was the first team to score, plating a run in the top of the third inning. The Tigers used a two-out walk to place a runner on base. The runner came around to score as Kevin Herlihy doubled down the left field line to put SSU in front 1-0.
 
North Florida responded with a run in the bottom of the inning. Tyler Marincov drew a walk with two outs to give the Ospreys a base runner. Roberson drove home Marincov with an RBI double to right center field, knotting the game at 1-1.
 
The Ospreys broke the game wide open in the bottom of the fourth inning. P. Karmeris led off the fourth inning with a walk. With one out, Ferguson delivered an RBI double to left center field. North Florida then benefitted from six consecutive walks by Savannah State to score four runs. P. Karmeris followed with a sacrifice fly to score the sixth run of the inning. Olmstead cleared the bases with a two-RBI triple to right center field to push the North Florida lead to 9-1.
 
After surrendering a run in the top of the sixth inning, North Florida responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. After back-to-back walks, the Ospreys scored two runs in the inning thanks to an RBI double by Walsh and an RBI groundout by Kyle Brooks.
 
The Ospreys added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh inning. P. Karmeris drove in a run with an RBI single to push the lead to 12-2.
 
The Tigers scored a pair of runs in the top of the eighth inning. Savannah State used a one-out walk and a two-run home run by David Richards to cut the UNF lead to 12-4.
 
North Florida responded with six runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. The Ospreys batted around for the second time in the game to score the final half dozen runs of the game on three hits with four walks and an error by the Tigers.
