Ospreys Edge Wildcats in Extras

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The University of North Florida baseball team battled Bethune-Cookman into extra innings, edging the host Wildcats, 4-2, in 11 innings at Jackie Robinson Field in Daytona Beach, Fla. The Ospreys improved to 3-1 on the year, winning their first road game of the season.
 
Offensively, North Florida recorded seven hits on the night, including one double. Corey Bass led all UNF batters with three hits on the night, while Ryan Roberson added a pair of base hits. Drew Weeks posted the only extra base hit of the night for the Ospreys, doubling in the eighth inning.
 
On the mound, Evan Incinelli picked up his first collegiate win, tossing 3.1 innings of scoreless relief. The sophomore surrendered two hits with no walks and a strikeout.
 
Incinelli entered the game in relief of starter David Trexler. The junior college transfer worked 7.2 innings in his first outing as an Osprey. Trexler scattered five hits on the evening, allowing a pair of runs. He walked one batter, while striking out a pair. Trexler posted five 1-2-3 innings and had his no-hit bid broken up in the bottom of the fifth inning.
 
The game was scoreless until the Ospreys plated a run in the top of the fifth inning. P. Karmeris led off the inning with a single to shallow center field. He advanced to third base on a single by Bass. On the play, Bass advanced to scoring position. Joe Wielbruda followed with an RBI groundout to third base. The Wildcats ended the inning as the Ospreys tried to advance to third on the play and were called out.
 
The Wildcats responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the fifth inning. Bethune-Cookman's Eric Sams broke up Trexler's no-hit bid with a leadoff single up the middle. Sams advanced to second on a wild pitch. With two outs, B-CU's Chris Biocic singled through the right side of the infield to score the tying run.
 
North Florida regained the lead with a run in the top of the sixth inning. With one out, Tyler Marincov drew a four-pitch walk. The junior advanced to second on a Roberson single up the middle. The duo moved up one base as Bethune-Cookman was called for a balk. With two runners in scoring position, Corbin Olmstead gave the visitors a lead with an RBI groundout to second base.
 
Bethune-Cookman knotted the score at 2-2 with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning. With one out, Sams singled up the middle to get things started for the Wildcats. He came around to score on an RBI double by Matt Noble. The Ospreys escaped further damage by catching a runner trying to steal and a line out to second base.
 
The game remained scoreless until the top of the 11th inning. Roberson led off the inning with a single off the glove of the B-CU third baseman. Garrick Ferguson entered the game to pinch run for Roberson. Pinch hitter Donnie Dewees singled up the middle to give North Florida a pair of base runners. Alex Bacon moved the runners up a base with a sacrifice bunt down the first base line. The Ospreys extended the inning as P. Karmeris loaded the bases with a walk. The Wildcats went to the bullpen, and new pitcher helped the Ospreys with a wild pitch, scoring Ferguson from third base. North Florida was able to score an insurance run as Bass reached base on a fielding error by the Bethune-Cookman first baseman. On the play, Dwees was able to score to make the game 4-2.
 
The Osprey defense was able to set the Wildcats down in order in the final inning of play. Incinelli started the inning off with a strikeout and back-to-back fly balls preserved the victory for UNF.
 
North Florida returns to the diamond over the weekend as the Ospreys host the Citadel in a three-game series at Dusty Rhodes Field at Harmon Stadium. Friday's game is slated for 6:00 p.m., while both Saturday and Sunday's contests will be at 1:00 p.m.
