JACKSONVILLE, Fla. –
Anna Budinska,
Saelina Dunn and
Abby Fesl all recorded double-doubles as University of North Florida volleyball posted a 3-1 (25-13, 25-23, 26-28, 25-18) victory over USC Upstate on Friday night at UNF Arena.
It was the 10th time this season in which Budinska had a double-double. Fesl's recorded seven double-doubles, while Friday night's was the first for Dunn this season. Budinska tallied 20 kills and 12 digs, while Dunn notched a 13-kill, 18-dig double-double. Fesl put up 45 assists and dug 16 balls.
Cameron McGuire added to the Ospreys' offense with 12 kills and a .440 hitting percentage.
Cari Whitmire made 28 digs.
Kayla Eversgerd (15 kills, 27 digs), Alexa Lagaly (11 kills, 10 digs) and Lexi Gober (36 assists, 20 digs) each had a double-double for USC Upstate.
"We tried a couple different line-ups tonight and weren't able to find the rhythm we were looking for, but we're going to continue to search for that consistent high-level of play," said head coach Steve Loeswick. "There were some definite bright spots – Anna had 20 kills and we dug a lot of balls. I'm not quite satisfied because I know we have a better match in us. Hopefully, we can play that match tomorrow against a very strong ETSU team. "
An early 7-0 run allowed UNF to quickly separate itself from USC Upstate in the first set. A kill from Budinska started the run that gave the Ospreys a commanding 15-5 advantage. UNF went on to lead by as many as 14, going up 22-8 on a Budinska ace. UNF ultimately ended the set with a McGuire kill to go up 1-0 in the match.
UNF and the Spartans battled in the second set, remaining just a few points away from each other. It was not until late in the set when UNF had a pair of four-point advantages. The Ospreys went up 20-16 on a block from
Erin Edwards and Budinska. After USC Upstate came to within two, a
Morgan Van Alstine kill and a McGuire-Dunn block provided UNF with a 23-19 lead. The Spartans responded with a four-point run to even the match at 23-23. However, kills from Van Alstine and Dunn provided UNF with the second-set victory and a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the third set, USC Upstate used a late 5-0 run to take a 20-18 lead. UNF fought back and went up 23-22 on a Spartan attack error. However, USC Upstate responded with kills from Shannon Weiss and Emily Koelling to take a 24-23 lead. Points were traded back and forth until USC Upstate captured the set on an Osprey ball handling error.
A key three-point run midway through the fourth set allowed UNF to pull away from USC Upstate. Up by one, a kill from McGuire was the first of the three points as the Ospreys were able to take a 17-13 lead. UNF gradually increased its lead over the Spartans before taking a seven-point, fourth-set victory and the match on another McGuire-Dunn block.
UNF returns to action on Saturday when the Ospreys host ETSU. Match time is set for 3 p.m., from UNF Arena.
