SKILLMAN, N.J. – University of North Florida men's tennis' Moritz Buerchner, Graham Edgar and Timo Kranz were recently named ITA Scholar Athletes, as announced by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
“Moritz, Graham and Timo led our team all season on the court and in the classroom,” said head coach Adam Schaechterle. “I congratulate them for this well-deserved honor from the ITA.”
To be named an ITA Scholar-Athlete, a student-athlete must be a varsity letter winner, have a grade point average of at least a 3.50 on a 4.0 scale for the current academic year and have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters, including freshman through senior year.
ITA Scholar Athlete is just the latest honor for Buerchner. He was selected as UNF's Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year and was a unanimous First-Team All-Atlantic Sun Conference. Buerchner also earned a spot on the Atlantic Sun's Academic All-Conference Team for men's tennis and was named Atlantic Sun's Academic Honor Roll. Buerchner posted a 16-6 record on the courts during the spring, while achieving a 3.74 GPA as a finance major.
Edgar finished up his playing career at UNF during the spring 2012 season, earning a spot in the singles and doubles lineup and helping the Ospreys break into the Campbell/ITA Men's Team Rankings. He teamed with Buerchner to go 5-0 in doubles play. In the classroom, Edgar just completed his first year in UNF's MBA program. Edgar, who graduated with his bachelor's from UNF last summer, compiled a 3.61 GPA as a business management major this year and was named to the Atlantic Sun Academic Honor Roll. He was the Varsity Student-Athlete recipient of the 2012 Wilson/ITA National Promotor of the Year and is currently doing a summer internship at the Wilson global headquarters in Chicago, Ill.
Kranz earned a spot on the Atlantic Sun's Academic Honor Roll after posting a 3.5 GPA as an economics major. In the spring, he appeared in UNF's singles line-up in several matches, posting a 4-2 record in his rookie season. He had back-to-back wins against Elon and Jacksonville and closed out the regular season with wins at Kennesaw State and Mercer.
