JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Leading 3-1, the University of North Florida baseball team broke the game open in the fifth inning with four runs on four extra base hits, including three consecutive triples, to claim the first game of an Atlantic Sun Conference series against crosstown rival Jacksonville, 11-2, on Friday night at Harmon Stadium.
The Ospreys pounded out 11 runs on 14 hits, including seven extra base hits. All nine starters in the UNF lineup had at least one hit with five batters recording multiple hits.
Alex Bacon,
T.J. Gavlik,
Paul Karmeris,
Ryan Roberson and
Drew Weeks each had two hits apiece. Gavlik and
Andrew Karmeris each notched a double in the game, while Roberson added a pair of two-baggers.
Bacon, Weeks and
Spencer Herrmann went back-to-back-to-back with three consecutive triples to help the Ospreys to a four-run fourth inning. It was the first time in North Florida history with three consecutive triples and just the third game in program history with three triples in a game – the first time since turning Division I in 2006. UNF posted three triples in a game against Fairmont on March 6, 1997 and versus Nova in the inaugural season in 1988.
On the mound, starter
Kyle Westwood was masterful in a complete game. The right-hander tied a career high with 9.0 innings. He scattered four hits, allowing just a pair of runs in his team-best fourth complete game of the season. Westwood struck out six batters without issuing a walk.
North Florida was the first team to score, scratching the scoreboard with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Gavlik led off the inning with a double through the left side of the infield. Roberson drove home Gavlik with a double down the right field line. Roberson quickly hustled to third base on the play as the ball was mishandled by the Jacksonville right fielder.
Tyler Marincov walked to give UNF runners on the corners. A. Karmeris hit a fly ball to center field to score Roberson on the sacrifice. Bacon singled to left field and Weeks was hit by a pitch to continue the inning, loading the bases. Herrmann scored Marincov from third base with the second sacrifice fly of the inning. The three runs proved to be enough of a cushion as Westwood surrendered just a pair of runs in the complete game effort.
Jacksonville chipped into the Ospreys' lead with a run in the top of the second inning. JU's Dan Gulbransen doubled to right field to start off the inning. He advanced to third on a wild pitch. The Dolphins scored a run on a ground out. Two more ground outs ended the inning with UNF in front 3-1.
The Ospreys broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth inning. With two outs, A. Karmeris doubled off the left field wall to place a runner in scoring position. He moved 90 feet closer to home on a wild pitch. Bacon tripled off of the right center field fence to score A. Karmeris from third. Weeks followed with his first collegiate triple. Herrmann completed the triple trifecta with his first collegiate triple. Herrmann came around to score on a wild pitch to increase the Ospreys' advantage to 7-1.
The Dolphins scored a run in the top of the sixth inning. With two outs, Jonathan Murphy hit a solo home run down the right field line to trim the Ospreys' lead to 7-2.
UNF added two insurance runs in both the seventh and the eighth innings. In the seventh, Marincov led off the inning with a single to right field. Bacon reached on a fielding error, advancing Marincov to second. The two runners moved up a base on a passed ball by the Dolphins. Weeks drove home the two base runners with an RBI single up the middle. In the eighth, P. Karmeris singled to left field to start things off. He advanced to second base on a passed ball. With one out, Gavlik walked and Roberson doubled down the left field line to score a run. Marincov walked to load the bases. With the bases loaded, A. Karmeris drew a RBI walk to provide the final margin of victory, 11-2.
